Out of a 3 minute trailer, I saw 15 seconds of gameplay. But let’s be real. This is Bethesda. We know what to expect. Tons of bugs and an already prepared statement to release after people realize their $70-$300 game isn’t released in a playable state. The best thing to do is wait for release. Check out reviews from your favorite source and also User reviews. Then wait a year for the community mod that fixes all the bugs that Bethesda was not able to fix. Then you might as well wait another year for DLC and for Starfield to be on sale.
There’s like a 50 minute gameplay walkthrough.
This is the way
I really like what I’m seeing, ranging from the depth of things to do, to how granular the systems are, to how much I love the art direction Bethesda has taken. That said, it still won’t be a day-1 buy for me when it launches, I simply don’t trust big AAA releases anymore and will wait at least a little while to see if it’s simply unpolished, or flat-out broken.
Starfield players on day one: “This game is incredible and life-changing! I’m so glad I pre-ordered!”
Starfield players on day 2: “PSA to new players, be careful not to go into space or else your save will get corrupted!”
Maybe I am just incredibly contrarian, but the art direction really inspires no emotions in me. I understand the idea of “NASApunk” but it looks like every DeviantArt near future art page. Blocky construction with a lot of triangle shaped cutouts and scalloping.
There is the cowboy sector and the cyberpunk sector, and on their own they look more interesting, but it seems like a kitchen sink approach to a tone instead of something with a more coherent identity.
I hope the game has more heart and identity, and I end up being one of those haters shown in a retrospective video on how great it is.
I completely agree with this take, including the “I hope I’m wrong” bit. It just looks… bland? Like it’s relying on the idea of space being expansive and vast and full of… well, everything that exists - but in the end will it just feel like a Bethesda game with space assets subbed in?
Then again I still play No Mans Sky so my desperation to be a space-man is obviously without limit.
As always, try to keep your hype in check and wait for the release. It sure looks good now but we’ll never know until someone has played it.
Let’s hope it will work out excellent!
Hype checking is not my strong suit
I wish you good luck then. 👍
Don’t know why but I’m skeptical. AAA releases have been quite often a disappointment for me the past few years. Hope it’s going to keep the promise…
It looks and feels very Bethesda-esque, for better of worse
The Starfield Direct showing really sold me on this. It looks like it comes the closest to my dream space game of anything released so far. Elite Dangerous nailed the feel of piloting your own spacecraft, but I didn’t get on with the actual structure of the game. No Man’s Sky continues to do amazing things, but its spaceflight feels a bit too stripped back for me and it still feels a little too aimless for my tastes.
This looks like a perfect middle ground, all backed up with a full blown Bethesda RPG too keep me engaged. :D
My only criticisms based on the Direct are that characters, and indeed character interactions still look a bit dated compared to more recent games, especially Cyberpunk 2077, and that the combat still looks a little janky. Don’t get me wrong, it looks a lot better than Bethesda’s older games, but still seems to be showcasing some rather basic AI and spongey enemies. Hopefully the RPG elements will make this side of the game feel more rewarding.
The characters seem to still being doing that Bethesda thing where they just stand in attention at you and stare you down lol.
Really curious to see how the combat actually feels and if there will be a V.A.T.S. like system, I know that’s something that a lot of people like and the combat is this game looks a lot faster than any combat in a Bethesda game before. So it could turn some people off who aren’t a big fan of fast paced combat but really enjoy Bethesda stories and worlds.
I don’t get the hype… I watched the gameplay trailer and it looks intensely underwhelming. Ignoring the sales jabber, it looks like a big, empty world which, at its best, is a knockoff of No Man’s Sky. They barely show any shots that aren’t the PC staring at a big, uninspired vista or having bland combat in bland sets. Considering how Bethesda releases go, how AAA releaes in general go, and the fact that trailers like these are supposed to OVERsell the game, I’m not really all that interested right now.
It’s pulling the same strings in people that star citizen has for a decade now. I personally also really want a good immersive space sim game - I don’t know if bethesda can deliver it, I am pretty sure I will be disappointed with how shallow it is since they tend to cater to the masses - but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see how it turns out, if they maybe manage to pull it off this time.
After all, what else is there to look forward to in this genre?
Yeah I’m not massively excited by it, it just looks…bland. Bethesda really excel at world building in general and this just looks very generic. I hope to be wrong but I doubt I will be.
Considering how Bethesda releases go
Fallout 76 was a flop because it just is a bad game, but haven’t Bethesda releases been otherwise a great success pretty much always? Oblivion, Skyrim, single player Fallout games have all been great hits and are still actively played to this date.
That’s why I’m actually slightly hyped for this. I reflect the trailer to the gaming experience of Fallout 4 and get the feeling that this is just going to be yet another Bethesda game I’ll be playing after 10 years still. Sure, there are going to be lots of funny and not so funny bugs but I guess nowadays that’s the way every game is released.
Bethesda games are usually succesful, Bethesda releases are usually a pile of crap. I can get past the “release $70 garbage and patch it up” model, but I don’t see anything here that makes me want to. I could totally end up loving it - not going to completely write it off based on trailers - but nothing I’m seeing here looks all that interesting.
I’ve never had a bad experience on release with any of the Bethesda games I’ve played. Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4.
I didn’t play 76, and like – fair game.
But for the games I’ve played it’s never been more than visual / physics bugs, or script events not triggering and doing a quick load to fix it.
Most importantly, I’ve always had a blast, even with the rough edges. As long as it seems like the devs gave it an honest go, are fixing bugs the players trigger, and the company didn’t lie about the state of the game, it’s just a much better experience to have a little grace around the launch of an ambitious game.

For about 10 years you literally couldn’t play Fallout 3 on PC without a user created mod. Until MS bought them, they still had Windows Live which was broken and stopped you being able to play the game if you were on Windows 7+
To be fair Windows Live for Gaming (or whatever it was called) DID function on release. It was dropped after a few years and doesn’t really count as a bad release.
Ah, good distinction! Yeah, I guess that’s true and without a huge modding community Bethesda games would also be kind of crap or not as highly valued at least.
Don’t ignore the fact that their games were still highly praised even before consoles got mods in 2016.
This looks fun. Happy it’s included with game pass. Gives a good chance to try it then buy the full game if it’s as good as I’m hoping.
After that 45 minute breakdown I’m very excited for No Man’s Skyrim. I can definitely understand the hesitation, it’s almost definitely gonna be riddled with bugs on release, but I’ve got gamepass, so I’ll happily beta test for y’all!
I think this will end up being my preferred route, assuming my computer won’t melt down. Wait to see what first impressions look like after release and if it looks good then toss myself into Gamepass for a month to check it out.
Daaaaamn u saying this on gamepass???
Day one on gamepass.
Looking forward to ship and outpost building. I wonder how much freedom you have in factions you can join?
With Bethesda making an entire galaxy for this game the next elder scrolls has got to come out alot quicker right? Going back to a single province(or maybe even a few) has to be a walk in the park by comparison Huff’s more copium
Going to be interesting once the modding come about on Starfield. I would still wait for the reviews to come out before buying the game though.
I’m honestly excited despite knowing that it’ll be busted on release (as is always the case with Bethesda). A game of this scale just won’t be very stable or balanced. I’m calling it now, there will be big technical issues.
A space exploration game with a “scan everything” mechanic, what a surprise… Really sick of this feature that replaces actual game design
Yeah, people are talking about the hesitation with the bugs, but I’m just hesitant on the gameplay. Procedural worlds, scanning, “barren but resource rich planets” don’t sound like riveting gameplay to me. The actual gameplay that was shown looked alright, but parts of it felt really weak. Worried they want the wrong way on Ambition vs. Fun
I was kinda hoping we could get better facial reconstruction for NPCs compared to Skyrim considering how long it’s been.
While I’ve see games with better faces, they definitely looked better than Skyrim.
