When I posted this, there wasn’t a single comment about the actual interview with Linus Torvalds. That’s a crazy amount of vitriol.
Something gets popular, people have to demonstrate how unique and sparkly they are by going against it, it’s a tale as old as time. I watch their videos occasionally and understand he’s neither demon nor god. But try listening to their WAN Show podcast and tell me he’s not (mostly) genuine and open…
It’s a huge deal that a youtuber as big as LTT is promoting Linux. This is how we break into the mainstream.
No kidding, it’s intense. I like the channel well enough, and find they’ve handled their various scandals to my satisfaction, at least. And yes, it’s 100% more entertainment than deep technical content I’m gonna learn from, but whatever, guilty pleasures aren’t some horrible sin, and it’s a better use of my time than reality TV. Being such a large channel does also get them access to some really worthwhile stuff now and again, like major factory tours, or Linus Torvalds, and that is stuff that’s really worth my time.
All of that said, I assume there’s lots of people here like myself, but it just ain’t worth jumping out of the woodwork for the guy. I like him, but not nearly enough to cast myself against this much vitriol for his sake.
This is the coolest video they’ve done in ages, and Linus Torvalds seems like such an excellent, genuine guy. He gives really thoughtful answers to even some of the silly joke questions, and it’s great. I super appreciate his perspective, and he interviews excellently.
Well I personally would both at the same time even.
The channel has no technical depth and has had one too many controversies to be considered valid. It’s a way for large companies to “give” the newest most expensive shit to have it featured for viewers to see and want to buy the newest most expensive shit. He is a sales person.
He spent a lot of years shitting on Linux on his channel before he pulled his head out of his ass and got halfway conciliatory about it. The few times he tried Linux it seemed like the entire show was designed to fail using linux to push people away. And considering how mercenary he has been throughout the years, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was paid to do that.
LTT was a big supporting factor for why I degoogled and switched to Linux when I did. It was partially because of their work I jumped over to self-hosting, open source, or other less “evil corpo” apps.
I’m not really interested in defending the channel or the guy, especially in areas so polluted with hate for the guy, but there’s no way they were paid by Microsoft to slander Linux and tbh I never took their Linux videos as overly critical or completely thorough examinations of the Linux experience. Idk, just feels like over exaggeration on the part of people who have too much fear a bit of non-perfect coverage will hurt their darling product.
If it helped you, that’s great. We can dislike LTT for our reasons and appreciate the positive impact when they have it.
Which is totally valid… And also the entire point of my comment. This video had Linus Torvalds in it, giving a pretty decent interview, while building a Linux PC and this thread was nothing but hate. Literally no appreciation for the positive impact LTT was having in a community that, at least on paper, should be over the moon.
I don’t see much Torvalds stuff on camera, so this was nice. I’m not asking people to like LTT, it’s just the dialogue around them on reddit and Lemmy feels extremely immature and outspoken and in this instance felt detrimental to the space and the supposedly shared hobby.

I watch it for the same reason I watch William Osman. They do a lot of fun bullshit videos like trying to watercool a server rack with a swimming pool.

Why does any even watch Linus Tech Tips, it feels like most his facts are based on his opinion, rather than any grounded reality, while he will flaunts it as fact. Then goes and make noob mistakes with his setups, while acting like computer Jesus. A fake interview only perpetuates this state of him making up content, to what ever pleases his himself and his patron audience. Truth only gets in the way of a good story, and this guy seems to know how to spin the tallest of stories
Wtf even is a fake interview lol, he had a lengthy talk with Linus Torvalds in where they discussed a wide variety of things and asked him numerous questions, how is that a fake interview
