The land was initially labelled as being under water. By the time the error was found, the land had passed to federal jurisdiction.

It’d be nice if there were a few more lost forties.
I had the opportunity to visit that once. It’s in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty easy to see the line that separated the patch of old growth forest with the surrounding second growth forest. It’s crazy that forests like that used to cover huge portions of the state of Minnesota and it’s (almost) all gone now.
