Hi everyone!
I’m really enjoying the Fediverse through Lemmy and Peertube.
One creator I enjoy and follow on the Fediverse is Gardiner Bryant as his content is really enjoyable.
Sadly he ´s the target of my post as he shares his content on many different communities that I follow.
Today I had 5 times the same topic on RetroDeck (great project too) on my feed on Lemmy (Voyager).
It is the same on PieFed (Interstellar).
This is really annoying and I haven’t found a way to not show these duplicates. Do you know about one or is it worked on?
Also when crossposting, it would be great if everything appeared under on post. Is it feasible?
Sorry if it’s easy and I just missed it. In a way I hope it is because it would mean that the Fediverse is festure rich😇
Here’s how piefed handles it using the browser.

Its so nice.
Lemmy doesn’t really have much in the way of an “algorithm” and it really shows with stuff like this.
Mbin can combine posts like that and show comments from all of them, but I think it shows all posts in the main post view, it only combines the comments. I really hope in the future Lemmy combines crossposts into one posts. It’s something an app could do. But I’d love to see it in the default UI so it hopefully encourages all apps to support it too.
Yep. That would be very nice, especially when crawling “new”.
I think it’s more of an etiquette problem than a feature problem. Posting the same thing to many different communities should be deleted as spam. The multipost in your screenshot is certainly spam. Report that.
If you want to post something and don’t know which community fits best, or feel like multiple could fit, then just post your thing to one community. If other people find your post especially interesting, they can crosspost it. To me, cross-posting your own posts is a sign of an overinflated sense of self-importance.
This would break the way many users use Lemmy & Co. I’m happy about users that cross-post.
I only follow communities I subscribe to. Let’s say I follow B but don’t follow A. If a user posts something related to topic A and topic B only in a community A, which I don’t follow, I would miss information interesting to me. When the user cross-posts to community B as well, then I’ll also see that useful post.
Also, even the same topic/community appears on different instances, and some users may not even be aware of the same community in other instances. They would miss useful or interesting information without cross-posting.
It is okay to miss out on something. If nobody crossposts it, it probably wasn’t that interesting anyways.
If you are afraid that you are missing out on some content, then look at the crossposts in your followed communities. Maybe the communities that were the origin of the crossposts are interesting, and worth joining? Then you’ll also see all their posts in the future.
If you want to see all posts that could remotely be relevant to you, you ultimately will have to follow all possibly relevant communities anyways. Because most users post their things simply to one community and call it done. And that’s ok and good, and does not need changing.
I could completely reverse your argument, insisting on why you should do differently.
It’s completely subjective.
You want to argue that people should post their posts to more communities?
And why do you want to insult me?PS: “insulting” was a phone typo, sorry! 🙏 makes no sense :) I meant “insisting” or “arguing”.
I’m not insulting anyone(edit: that was because of a typo, see other reply). I don’t want to argue. I’m simply saying that the position or preference is subjective: neither I or you can make an objective argument of why someone ought or oughtn’t to cross-post.The simple proof is that you’re unhappy about cross-postings – and surely I have no right to say that you should be happy about them instead. And at the same time I am happy about cross-postings – and you have no right to say that I should be unhappy about them instead.
That one one thing I liked about Piefed. If only the creator wasn’t a man-baby.
I block the person who spam posts. Then I never have to worry about seeing their posts again.
I’d do this if he wasn’t one of my favorite creators doing a lot of good for the Fediverse by publishing his content there.
I think some mobile apps get rid of the duplicates, although I’m not familiar with which ones do that. Unless someone else replies here, you could try posting to !lemmyapps@lemmy.world
For voyager it is an open issue
Sounds like a good feature request, to either Lemmy in general or whatever that app is, or both
In Lemmy, no way.
In Tesseract (yes, that Tesseract!) there was a partial way, but only if the posts happened to come in as part of the same batch when accessing the instance. db0 helpfully made a fork of that, but the community outcry was so enormous that several instances simply dropped support of it entirely rather than switch to using that fork.
In PieFed, partially, but only for those sharing the same URL (like these examples probably do?) - so text-only posts do not qualify.
And then 3rd-party apps add a whole new dimension to this, by replacing the Lemmy/PieFed/PyLova/Mbin front-end with their own stuff. Note that Voyager provides only rudimentary support for PieFed. Overall, app support for the improvements that PieFed makes over Lemmy is still fairly shitty, sorry to say - note that you can tweak some settings in a web browser (like user blocks & such that are entirely impossible in Lemmy) and then that affects your using the 3rd-party app on a more daily basis, but many of the more advanced features of PieFed/PyLova are still inaccessible from most 3rd-party apps. See this wiki page for more details - like “Crosspost comment merge” is only supported in Interstellar, and some features (like a mod locking a post) is not available from any app, iOS or Android.
Lemmy is the same way - reducing such crossposts an extremely often-requested feature, for both software platforms, but so far I think only PieFed accessed via a web browser can do it even partially. Or certain 3rd-party apps (not sure which ones, though I’ve looked at several FLOSS offerings and did not see that - maybe only paid ones do?)
