Rightfully so.
Lemmy servers are hosted by just some people that often don’t even accept donations, shoulder the entire legal liability and are sys admin all together by themselves.
And then there is the clownshow reddit being a gigantic company and not even able to not be a gigantic shitshow.
I’m actually seeing more and more .world users getting pissed as the downtimes become more frequent now.
I mean that is the problem of too many people being on that one instance.
I mean that is the problem of too many people being on that one instance.
From what I understand, capacity isn’t the issue, it’s that they’re being repeatedly DDoS’ed
It’s a chicken and egg problem, their high popularity makes them a ddos target
Technically, a DDoS can happen naturally if enough people are trying to use it at the same time. I’ve seen it happen to other, larger websites before. And lemmy.world definitely doesn’t have the infrastructure of some of those larger websites.
Apparently that’s not the case for lemmy.world, it seems someone is pissed for being banned so they’re DDSOSing .world specifically.
Tho I agree all people trying to go to the same instance is not a smart thing.
Yep, I just saw the update they posted.
I really blame Sync for defaulting to lemmy.world, imo lemmy.world should close to new registrations, at least while they’re figuring things out.
I moved instances after the downtime when Sync came out, it’s been smooth sailing since
Yeah… it makes for a fucking awkward experience.
Just swapped to a different instance personally
Yup, no biggie. Will use .world when it’s working and the other when it’s not.
I just did the move. Tired of having the website offline and no info. Will delete the account soon
have half dozen various types. no need to delete. fedi-wide accounts are still a wish. name them the same and carry on. can set a redirect on mastodon. not sure lemmy
Thinking of the same thing, but if I delete my account on an instance, do the comments and posts from that account also get deleted?
IF you want to switch to an alternative instance use the tool Lasim to synchronize your accounts: synchronize subscriptions, settings and/or blocks. Tool is available for Windows, Linux and MacOs.
Do you know of a way for those of us only on mobile to move subs over?
just pick another instance and create another account. same email. not complicated. can’t migrate stuff you can’t get to, meh lemmy instances fediverse.observer
Thanks, I know how to create a new account on a new server, I just hoped for an easy way to move all my subs.
No, sorry :(
Just tried macOS. Didn’t work.
Oh that’s a pity. Switched from lemmy.world to feddit.nl flawlessly today. Using Windows though.
My MAC wouldn’t let me run the .exe because of security. Am I supposed to bypass security?
Did you download the zip for MacOS? Exe is only for Windows I believe?
And I don’t know if you are supposed to bypass security. I only have very limited Mac experience.
I may try again later. I have a windows pc I can try it on.
As tea@lemmy.today said, make sure www.lemmy.world is online. If you cant visit www.lemmy.world then the tool won’t work either.
Cuz you can just use another smaller instance, as you should.
Lemmy.zip and lemm.ee are cool
Everyone talking about how small and better lemm.ee is really starting to give “have you heard about this hidden gem The Witcher 3?” vibes.
lemm.ee isn’t even that small. It’s the 6th largest active lemmy instance iirc
That’s the point of the joke, the witcher 3 is a huge game but people always act like they’re in on some secret for knowing that it’s good.
Celeste.
Another good one, yeah. Or Hollow Knight.
How many copies do you have?
/r/tomorrow is leaking

For all the people that like to talk about having access to the whole fediverse and decide for themselves who to block…
mander.xyz and ttrpg.network are both rather niche instances in their own right, but don’t defederate, and I don’t believe are defederated by, anyone.
No one join them and say/do anything toxic though, don’t ruin a good thing for me lol
Shhhh
Yeah, .zip represent
If only federation existed… and other instances existed…
Ah yes, let’s forever create new accounts on new instances as they all get bogged down. Solid solution.
It’s not “bogged down,” it’s being DDOS attacked.
What’s the outcome of a DDOS attack again? XD
Okay, granted, but only using the term “bogged down” adds to the misconception that the problem is too many accounts on the server. It should be clarified that it comes from a deliberate outside source.
I made an account on sdf.org because I got tired of lemmy.world’s servers going down. But I found out that SDF’s servers often go down, too…
tchncs is pretty stable so far
I’m doing pretty good so far.
I never gave reddit 1c and blocked all ads. I donate to lemmy.world.
I have zero anger when lemmy is down, I despised reddit, especially towards the end.
I really wish more people would donate to lemmy I think it’s totally fair to pay for someone to manage and help with running the site.
It’s hard to just say “volunteer”… Even if people volunteer and we can only afford to send 50% of their fee their way it’s still something…
If we want lemmy to thrive without ads we have to all pitch in. Just give 2$/ month… If we all did that we’d be able to hire people full time…
I’ve been trying to find a smaller instance and I tried a couple, they see waaaaaay different things. I can’t even see lemmy.world on one of them. I might have to keep all of the instances and just jump around.
Thats what I do. It’s a strength of the fediverse, and most of the apps handle account swapping pretty seamlessly.
What apps do you recommend for swapping instances?
I have tried Jerboa and Connect. Both allow me to swap accounts from the main menu, but I am brought back to me default start view and not the community/thread I was looking at.
I really like Liftoff for this. You can choose instances on the fly while posting, searching, or reading comments without losing your spot.
It’s really nice.
I love it too. In case you didn’t know, you can just lurk on other instances without having to have an account by adding just the instance.
I noticed that, because I went to add my beehaw account that I had created when I joined Lemmy, but I guess beehaw deleted it for being inactive or something. Beehaw still shows up on my instance list, and I kind of wish I could remove it.
On your instances list long press Beehaw and the option to remove it will show up.
Omg, thank you so much
I tried lemm.ee and it’s cool but I see so many hexbear posts on the All tab from like any of their communities spewing hate and it’s frustrating to scroll past
Yeah, that’s a nah from me for that very reason. Those people should be shouting that stuff in their bathroom, not in a place where others have to hear it.
I believe there is a way to block instances, I don’t know if it blocks comments but i believe it would block the posts
Yeah, seeing some of the stuff instances allow (or promote!) has definitely made me cognizant of who I federate my own public instance with.
Tbh I’ve just stopped using my world account at this point. Lemmy.ca has been much more reliable so far lol.

The admin of lemm.ee honestly is probably the most knowledgeable of any Lemmy developer in my experience too. He’s helped me with civilloquy.com a couple times.
Until a moose power - fucks the servers
Up time 76% on lemmy.world // last 24h.
No message from any of their admis.
Outside attack : usual shitheads. And ifLMLW fails, they will attack the next big one.Edit #1 : LM is Lemmy.world
Edit #2 : oups LW … not LM
Edit #3 : Lemmy.World status
Edit #4 : from 4am utc //24h :
users who wanted LM explanation :
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Is that info publicly available?
LW is currently down (for me, at least) and I’m curious if it tends to happen at the same time every day.
From the sidebar of the main page of lemmy.world, so :
That 76% was 2 hours ago, now at 74%
The funny thing is that Reddit with its big teams and infrastructure was also sluggish and going down a lot this week and we keep forgetting that. No excuses for Reddit.
wjats so good about lemmy.world compared to lemmy.ml
More letters
lemmy.world isn’t run by communists
that sounds like a downside, unless you mean the kinda USSR/Chinese “communists” that are just state capitalists/feudalists
Well lemmygrad.ml loves to make memes about how great the Chinese government is and how everyone who criticises the Chinese government is just mean, and they’re kind of the poster child for lemmy.ml, so…
well those are like pro fascist people, not exactly communists, because current china is very much fascistic in it’s behavior.
That’s exactly the kind of people who run ml sadly.
I heard lemmy.ml is run by genocide denying tankies so that put me off from it a little
I mean communities being on world is an issue too.
I switched to lemm.ee, it’s much more stable since it’s not constantly being attacked by script kiddies. I have a theory a user got banned, and is making it their personal mission to ruin .world’s performance. Please donate to your home instance owner(s) if they have that set up. Even if it’s just a little, it can make everyone’s experience better.
options are optional
Not having just an account on .world is a necessity since it’s the favorite target of attacks (at least, I’m assuming that’s why it’s down so much).
