  • I don’t care if AI is useful, it’s not this useful. And it sure as shit isn’t going to see the returns they expect.

And how. Making coders slightly more efficient really just isn’t worth this much. There’s also going to be hell to pay when software created by all of the vibe-coding is found to be full of security holes.

They want to pitch this as unemployment causing efficiency gains, but this shit clearly can’t do anyone’s job that wasn’t already automatable through regular software.

  • There might be more than one person in our heads.

But of course. Not more than one person, but certainly more than one part, right?

If you ever have meditated or attempted to meditate, you see this immediately. There is the portion of you that is trying to get you to concentrate on your breath or mantra, and there are the meandering parts of your mind that are more susceptible to moods and drawing your thoughts to other things.

The same thing goes for reading. Sometimes you’ll be passing your eyes over the words on the page but most of your mind has vacated the premises.

There’s also things like instances where you drive to a place where you used to live or used to work.

There are different processes running for certain, and the mind isn’t a singular thing, but ultimately I’m not sure that anything is. I don’t think that any of this says much definitive about free will though.

  • I’ve read articles saying that abolishing ICE now has popular support, and other ones saying that it is much more difficult to unwind a carceral state than it was to put it together in the first place. But ICE is uniquely open to being made irrelevant via presidential order. All a president would have to do is use the vast power of pardon and clemency to pardon people for crossing the border illegally.

Immediately afterwards, ICE would have nobody to arrest or harass and no job to do.

In addition, the “bad hombres” could still be deported, but only on the back of other crimes they committed.

  • Yep people want to still think that this is just a bump in the road. During Trump’s first term, I thought that there was a glimmer of hope there that this could be true, but Joe Biden’s administration proved that there is no going back. It was a pleasant four year reprieve from waking up to a fresh new hell every morning, but at this point Trump and his associated chaos and fascism are back.

Marxists of course predicted this the whole time but I was holding out a little hope that they were wrong. They were terribly, disastrously correct.

  • The problem though is much bigger than “verifying” an image’s authenticity. 99% of people are not going to go to a website to learn how to do some new thing to verify the authenticity of an image that confirms and validates positions they already hold.

Right, so once you have the technology to verify that a picture or video was captured by an actual camera, you show this seal of authenticity right next to the media itself in the feeds, and make it very easy to do so. Then, people can look at a glance and see it isn’t verified (similar to how you get all kinds of warnings that a website isn’t secured) and while that still doesn’t prevent people from thinking AI genned shit is real, it’ll help all the most willfully ignorant.

I do think the authenticity problem is harder to crack than is assumed here, and I also think that GenAI companies (and their co-conspirators like X and Facebook and friends) are trying to make it hard to tell whether or not something is real on purpose to push the technology or their agenda.
