Summary

Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal overturned the convictions of three pro-democracy activists who had been jailed for refusing to provide information about their organization to national security police.

Chow Hang-tung, Tang Ngok-kwan, and Tsui Hon-kwong—members of the Hong Kong Alliance that held annual Tiananmen Square massacre vigils—had already served their 4.5-month sentences from 2023.

The judges ruled that government prosecutors had “redacted key facts” which “deprived the appellants of a fair trial.”

This represents a rare victory for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, which has seen numerous activists jailed under national security laws.

    Yeah, that’s truly shocking.

This is a bizarro universe, so maybe China will become the new bastion of democracy once the US completely falls to fascism.

No, mainland China isn’t going into democracy. The court ruling is only relating to Hong Kong because they have a separate system from mainland China. “One country, two system” is the slogan before HK is returned to China.

It sounds like Hong Kong still has a bit of autonomy. Hopefully this continues and the PRC doesn’t come down on it as administrative oversight on their part.

I meant more that they might be trending towards democracy as the rest of the world trends towards fascism.

So when does the “democratic” country of China have its first free election where someone besides Xi is allowed to actually run/win?

And I’d love it if all the rich people in the world stopped trying to burn it down to buy the ashes and instead redistributed their wealth, fixing most economic problems in global society overnight.

You’re right, that was a nice jaunt through fantasy land.
