Summary
U.S. immigration authorities detained Fabian Schmidt, a 34-year-old German national and legal U.S. resident, at Boston Logan Airport on March 7.

He required medical attention at some point during the interrogation and he was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, Senior said.

So “interrogation” just automatically means physical violence to ICE?? Not sure if there’s a better way to read that. I doubt he coincidentally came down with a bad cold in the middle of an interrogation. Fucking thugs.
“It was just said that his green card was flagged,” Senior told WGBH. She said her son was “violently interrogated,” stripped naked by immigration officials and put into a cold shower.
“He hardly got anything to drink. And then he wasn’t feeling very well and he collapsed,” she said.

That’s what it is, yes. They’re not even close to the proposed numbers so they detain and deport whoever they can, and then “investigate” their mistakes.
Dumb question: Is that because there are far fewer people without documentation than expected?
Not really, it’s just that Trump is a fucking idiot. He came in and started slashing government jobs, created chaos, and then just thought ice would somehow get better at a job, that was being done more efficiently than when he was president the first time.
Biden was already doing a better job than Trump ever did. Trump was never going to do better. It was just another lie.
As the other comment says it’s because everything is so disorganized. In most cases ICE cannot even get a legit warrant and people are aware of it and of their rights, thanks to public outreach that spreads awareness. ICE is bad at their job but Homan needs to show numbers, any numbers at all.
ICE fucked with the Germans. I certainly hope swift action is taken.

At that time, Schmidt was arrested in California with more than 30 grams of cannabis. The case was dropped. In 2022, however, a federal investigative agency contacted Schmidt again about the case and summoned him to a hearing. However, he failed to appear because he hadn’t received the letter due to a move.
