Chinese travellers are estimated to have cancelled hundreds of thousands of flights to Japan amid reports of suspended visa processing and cultural exchanges as a diplomatic dispute over Japan’s stance on Taiwan continues.
Under pressure from business groups, Japan has sent a senior diplomat to Beijing in an attempt to calm tensions after Japan’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, said her country could get militarily involved if China attempted to invade Taiwan.
Her comments prompted fury from China’s government, which issued warnings against Chinese travellers and students going to Japan.
Reported as “title not matching” which is technically correct, but I’m not going to force it when the difference is “hundreds of thousands” vs. “500,000”.
Not trying to single out the Chinese, but it would be nice to be able to walk around my own city without having to dodging hordes of tourists. I understand that many of us rely on the tourism industry to put food on the table, but damn, I wish we could ease it a little :(
Beijing’s travel boycott of Japan could result in an economic loss of about 2.2 trillion yen ($14.23 billion) on an annual basis, reducing the nation’s real gross domestic product by 0.36%, according to an estimate by Takahide Kiuchi, executive economist at Nomura Research Institute.
I understand being annoyed by tourist, but they bring a lot of money.
