They still need to legislate against the algorithms these companies use. It’s not like adults aren’t immune to this shit. But a blanket ban for teens is way easier to do than making laws against oligarchs, so here we are.

You should NEVER be banned from access to information. What you do with it, how you interpret it and where you get it should be up to you. Fuck this lust for power and control over information. Dont let yourself be easily manipulated.

the real purpose of the ban is to curb the growing political awareness of young people

Hot take. Maybe people shouldn’t be getting their political awareness from algorithmic sites. For every teen who learns Gaza etc there’s 10 that learn about the Manosphere and how bad vaccines are.

That’s sort of the problem with… reality, man. Both you and this kid are right, life isn’t black and white and there are a lot moving parts.

You’re 100% right that nobody should be getting political information from social media. This kid stating that is showing his age. Social media is a cess pool to become politically informed.

But he’s also right that this sort of thing can be a slippery slope.

That’s a line from the news site’s reporter, not the kid. It’s a slippery slope though for sure, but because of the age verification thing. They ought to ban black box ranking outright for all ages.

Are you aware that you are currently commenting on a news post on an algorithmic social media site?

Lemmy algorithm is based as hell though since purely shows you what is popular since it is not from a profit-driven source. Big tech closed source algorithms are designed from profit incentives because of capitalism. When people are talking about “The algorithm”, they usually mean the latter. There’s nothing wrong with getting your news from Lemmy.

Wouldn’t this headline have worked when cigarettes were made 18+? And this was known ahead of time through surveys so how is this news or commentary on how policy is going this early into it being enacted?

Well, yeah. Pretty sure highschoolers have been opposed to this the entire time, but isn’t the entire point that nobody cares about their opinion on this?

I feel like the real reason for the social media ban is to establish some kind of digital ID program and requiring that ID for everything a person does online. That makes it possible to curate not only where you can go online, but what you see when you get there. It is being sold as a way to “protect the children” but the reality is the children are the target audience. Children don’t have many preconceived notions about privacy, so violating their privacy will be so much easier.

Remember, in just a few years these “children” will be adults and any changes made for them today will eventually become the normal for everyone.
