With PipePipe, I’ve had an amazing experience, in very very few ocasions I had videos failing on me, and when I went to F-Droid (with Izzy-On-Droid) there there was, the update that already fixed the issue.
It still works in Firefox if you switch to the desktop site. You can also use uBlock Origin and SponsorBlock with it to get rid of the ads.
Video Background Play Fixfor Firefox as well
We need a real YouTube alternative.
Won’t happen. Google ran YouTube at a net loss for a decade before turning a profit. Very few companies have the kind of money to invest like that. Video hosting is crazy expensive, especially when it’s free.
Given the number of porn video websites now, I don’t think the cost of video hosting is the major issue.
The bigger issue is likely having to moderate the site. Twitch focused on live streaming as a way to reduce exposure to copyrighted content and TikTok kept videos short enough that it could skate around fair use by not being able to air longer form copyrighted content.
It’ll never happen, until they make YT premium so prohibitively expensive that a majority of users no longer want to pay. If they’re smart, they’ll keep it at the current price until it starts losing money, because their effective monopoly is YouTube’S most valuable asset. Once they get any kind of decent competition, the whole house of cards tumbles.
Can’t even use it with Premium.
Yes, I have YouTube Premium. Family member has it, might as well take advantage of it.
“You will buy youtube premium, damn it!!!”
See this article for an analysis.
They tested that when logged in with an account without YouTube premium, locking the screen paused playback and caused the playback notification to disappear. The notification didn’t disappear with an YouTube Premium subscription (althrough playback still paused). This was a few days ago, before this confirmation.
Then it seems like a strategic move alongside locking higher playback speeds behind premium as well.
UI and player control on payed tiers when it makes no technical difference to them as a delivery platform.
Orion still does background playback and also blocks ads ! I only tested it on an iPhone though :/
