Boss: “Why are you late today?”

Employee: “My BMW was showing ads every 10 minutes. It was difficult to drive.”

    Boss: “Fair enough.”.

Seems optimistic to me! I would expect “it is your responsibility to be here on time and ready to work. Leave earlier if you must.”

There was some sadness wrapped in the neutral -leaning response. Sort of like accepting the excuse for being late due to the ads disrupting the control of the car as a common thing / the new norm.

I can imagine such a scenario. I can imagine being a manager of a team, and having someone come in and say that, and just feeling dread and sympathy. You’re right, and not all employment situations are the same, not all managers are psychopaths. For many, though, they are not working under such “managers.”

But I’m grateful to you for pushing back against the pervading darkness in our collective mind. Let it not, however, dampen our efforts to seek a remedy.
