Got the Switch 2 Zelda Edition and having a blast with Mario Kart World.

I was worried with all the criticism on Reddit, Lemmy and general on the internet that the game would be such a letdown but I think exactly because of the criticism and that I never really had any expectations that the game is now really fun for me.

I like that the races are a bit chaotic and really love the KnockOut Tour thing. I also like the new animations and the way the game looks.

The only two things that I have to get used two are; the racing feels a bit slower and that drifting seems a little different than the previous game(s).

As for the Switch 2 itself, its nice! But I’ll be purchasing these third party grips. The console feels non-ergonomic (coming from a Steam Deck).

Can’t wait until Ocarina Remake is released and a month or two later will be getting Tears of Kingdom (or Bananza).

I’m also slightly hoping that Nintendo will be making a sequel of Mario Odyssey and Captain Toad Tracker.

Don’t sleep on Kirby Air Riders. If you have the means to borrow it from a friend or library, try it out! Especially since you mention you like the chaotic MKW races- the chaos is turned up to 11 in this game.

It’s unfortunately a divisive game, though, where according to everything I’ve read online you either love it or hate it, so I can’t comfortably recommend you drop cash for it without trialing it first. But as a veteran of the original I think it’s brilliant.

Yeah, I had my eyes on Air Riders as well but can’t really figure out whether I’d like it or not. Do you have the game? Could you tell me if you can just race and pick up the turbos etc or do you continually need to pick up stuff to keep the speed up?

Will see if the library has it or I might pick it up if ever a sale comes (or if I have money to spend).

Not sure exactly what you mean by picking up the turbos. But there are 4 main game modes to play. The first is Air Ride, a Mario Kart esque racing mode that is very fun and faster paced than MK. The second, Top Ride, is a top down race on small maps. This is fun as well, but it’s pretty much universally agreed it’s the weakest game mode.

City trial, the third one, is the most popular mode. Players start in a sandbox map on a weak vehicle. You drive around the map picking up power ups to increase the stats of your vehicle. There are also other vehicles around the map that all have different strengths/weaknesses. At the end of 5 minutes, the players are moved to a mini event that they all compete in using the vehicle they built over the 5 minutes. It’s very fast paced, and very fun.

The final game mode Road Trip, is a single player story mode. It has rogue-like elements where you pick between 3 mini challenges pulled from the other 3 game modes. Beating that challenge rewards you with a stat increase for your vehicle and some money for stores you come across. You keep increasing stats and finding new vehicles as you progress to eventually reach the end and take on bosses/harder challenges with your character.

If you have played Sakurai’s games before, this will feel very familiar. There are many aspects of the game that will remind a lot of people of Smash Bros. It is a racing game, but it’s also kind of a vehicle battle game too. I’d definitely recommend picking it up, as I personally find it significantly more fun than Mario Kart World.

The karts more or less move at the same speed consistently, some a bit slower because they are tanker, and some a bit faster. Some have better speed and control in the air (and air control is so much better and more meaningful in this game vs Mario Kart.) Courses often have boost pads for temporary speed increases. But there’s no CC’s like you have in Mario Kart- the game really only has one speed.

If you have the means to play the original GameCube game on an emulator or something, that could also give you a good idea of how the game feels overall. The new one has a faster base speed for everything though.
