What would cause a large swarm of wasps to fly through a neighborhood?

Earlier today I was outside with my dogs when I heard a persistent and loud buzzing. Looked up and saw wasps had filled the sky above mine and my neighbors yard

Wasps swarm in order to establish new colonies; either because an existing colony is outgrowing the local food supply, or because their nest has been damaged.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
