    Shit.

This could work. “We only scan your shit with your permission” might placate enough people for them to not realise that to make that possibly at all, security has already been compromised, as required by law.

This does not alleviate the issues of the original proposal in any way whatsoever.

Except that in this case even if you say no, the law has already required that e2ee be broken and backdoored.

Regardless of whether they actively scan only with permission and only images, it still breaks the security for everyone as images are sent with the same security as text. And future governments might not be so kind with the ability to break into everyone’s communications.

    This is bad news.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear, and you’ll still have the security against the bad boys, but not against us. The magical golden radiant power of the law will strike us down if we ever attempt that. We can sign this with goat blood if you wish so.

    Sarcasm, of course.

I’m not a EU citizen, I actually live in Russia, but the right time to riot would be about now. Once such a system is in place, everybody with power and position to infiltrate and misuse it - will. Be it some imagined neo-Nazi conspiracy, or a mafia organization, or a faction in the government allied with some other foreign government to assist its crimes. Any kind of what’s called “long hands”.

And once such hands have used it to achieve the desired influence, the environment will be too different for them to ever get punished for that.

Like if you are in a position to commit a genocide, that will only be a problem for you if you don’t finish the job. Otherwise nobody will be left to oppose you.

Can’t believe these asshats are still hiding their megalomaniac desire for power and control behind the well being of children. If we ever need perpetual surveillance it’s to keep scum like them in check.

I cannot imagine the implementation of that without help of apps devs. How are they going to force companies, registered in UAE (Telegram) or US (Signal), to implement this feature specifically for EU market?

Likely they’ll force app/play store to require compliance for the apps published in that region.

Yes, yes, side loading, FOSS. Grandma won’t sideload, and responsibility will be on the platform owner. That’s you if you run your own matrix server for your grandma.
