  • Yeah, that’s where the ‘IT professional’ lost me.
(They might have a complicated setup with everything overly managed … but this is just a new vlan, unrelated to anything …)

Not to mention you might want to have one for test purposes anyway.

Also there are alternativnes, like mobile data via phone hotspot.

Or giving a kid to play some horror game on your gaming rig.

Or saying you don’t have wifi, wired net only, why didn’t they bring an ethernet dongle??

  • I totally agree - and depending on your needs & budget, slightly older server-grade equipment idle power usage is much higher compared to consumer stuff (servers didn’t really know how to idle until “recently”). And also if you don’t host a tone of different things for different users (ie you don’t need all the pcie lanes) you get so much faster CPUs for the same monies.

The only server-grade things you need are ofc disk drives that are gonna do server stuff.

And a good PSU (but a nice Seasonic is almost server-grade anyways). When ppl talk about power usage they tend to forget PSUs (they check their PC usage with a shitty PSU that itself can’t idle low & maybe doesn’t even get to 90% at peak loads).

    Yes!

I get that all things have some limits, but in this case of a chatty cat it would just have to be so unimaginably bad that such a rarity would basically not happen.

I also unwillingly lose respect for ppl that want their cats to be quiet.
It’s like they want a piece of furniture, an ornament, not a living being - actually worse, a living being to not really be itself.
