I like city building games and puzzles. I like other things as well, but that’s not important right now.

  • Or will it really just last forever?

Donald Trump and Israel seem to be happy with this as an outcome. Israel needs america to fight the war on its behalf though.

I too was thinking about 1984 a lot since the iran conflict. Many read 1984 and ask “so when will it happen in our future?” as if it’s a certainty rather than a possibility.

I would conjecture that we’ll look back on the USA-israel hegemony (194? - 2026) as being our own little Oceania/Orwellian-era. I think the war with iran will be what quickly and ultimately collapses this status quo, which was already receding. We should probably be thankful that living under it wasn’t as hellish as the book [1984] describes.

Though you can, honestly, take any part of that book and find events across the gloval american empire which plqyed-out exactly the same as in the book; the torture ( or, ‘advanced interrogation’) the thought-crimes, the mass-surveillance and the establishment of controlled opposition groups.

  • To do it in your style:

    • Community (Absurdist Comedy/Sitcom) is recommended by a lot of people and one of the most unique shows ever, I feel. While the premise sounds commonplace, it makes innumerable little twists on expected tropes to achieve this. You will be straight up hooked after 2 episodes.
    • Daredevil (Superhero Action Drama) this is a “cold take.” I think even people whi hate superheroes get a lot of good things out of this, because it’s chock full of non-superhero stuff and all of that is done perfectly, deliciously.
    • Frasier (Normal Sitcom, spin-off to Cheers) I wouldn’t recommend watching all of cheers, but i would recommend watching all of Frasier. Very funny. When the cast look like just normal average people instead of being attractive fun 20-something year olds, you know it’s gonna have super well crafted humour.
    • Poldark (Period Drama - Political & Historical) This is the gateway drug for period dramas. THE. GATEWAY DRUG. I would actually recommend it before watching the more mainstream stuff like Pride and Predjudice (which I love) or Wuthering Heights (which I don’t love). Skip season 5 though.
    • Deutschland 83 (Spy Drama) This is full of history I didn’t know much about. You gain an insight into the East-German-perspective during the Cold War. is also very grounded and realistic which makes the stakes higher/feel more real to the viewer. Used to be free on Channel4 iPlayer, idk where it is anymore.
    • MadMen (Period Piece/Industry Drama) Again, a popular suggestion. I probably don’t need to explain. Personally haven’t seen anything like this show and I had to watch it 1-3 episodes a day for half a year.

  • 7 things, tap to expand
    • Moderation: choosing when to ban people or not, and acting on it promptly.

    • Blocking people, since you can block communities (needed to use a 3rd party app to actually do this on reddit).

    • Filtering out/organising porn, seperating it from SFW content (Reddit tricks you into seeing porn all the time but lemmy holds it on seperate instances.)

    • less addictive design

    • comment formatting is made easy and seems to have more options.

    • honestly has more soul and more polite interactions. Reddit is good in places but not consistently/overall.

    • Doesn’t demand you install its app, browser is fine.

  • If i was homeless i’d probably want driving to some smaller towns or hooking up with jobs, but the latter is a lot to ask for and nobody seems to do the small town strategy i have in my head, so i guess I truly don’t know what it’s like.

Then again, the decent homeless shelters and charities are in big cities. My city has LOADS but also has/recently had an industry of drug dealers exploiting these charities.

If you want to genuinely help homeless people, go into it being aware that there are dangerous and horrible people who it is not safe to help, who just love exploiting people.

If you want to help the homeless, do it through a charity, i.e making face-2-face contact with ones going through the right channels to get help - perhaps you will encounter people who need directing to these charities or don’t know they exist.
