Whoa, mama!
The alternative search engine that does what’s right, we believe that privacy is a human right and that a true alternative must have its own index 👉 https://www.mojeek.com/
Whoa, mama!
Choices do this very thing, you click a button and the search in the bar goes to that site, if you have this enabled in the search bar. If not they are present at the bottom of the results.
We are in the process of open sourcing the library of choices so they are user-submitted.
our Search Choices might be of use here, different implementation but similar: https://blog.mojeek.com/2022/02/search-choices-enable-freedom-to-seek.html
It’s not currently got something live on it to test (you can use it but it should be the same results across both). If you wanna help out then let us know how you find Mojeek via this survey please!!! https://blocksurvey.io/mojeek-user-survey-2024-mJmJ2bBcQDy9QtByOmJX7A?v=o
hello, we’re quoted in the piece, set your parameters to look only since the change/recently i.e.
Bing - Restricted to a week here and there is nothing
Mojeek - We are not crawling due to the block, avoiding adding results without content
As most are just using Bing’s results (DDG, Qwant, Ecosia) you should see similar.
there’s a safe mode if it’s of use: nested in the settings gear menu but also on /preferences (to turn it on for all searches)
can’t emphasise too much that this piece is a very necessary read for anyone who wants to know about search; not just because it says good things about us, but because of the depth of research which has been put in here. Most times you encounter an article about indexes they are just taking whatever a (meta)search engine says about themselves, not even looking at privacy policies for “relationships with microsoft” etc. or doing any comparative work.
people interested in alternative search tend to be in spaces that aren’t your GAFAM big tech networks, we’ve been on masto since 2018 also
not to come off as overly dismissive of people elsewhere, but you also find that the quality of discourse and people’s willingness to think about things are both considerably more elevated
we’re working on it 😉 slow and steady and all that; we also fixed a bug with recrawl recently that should be improving things
you can also send us in queries where we’re not perfect, or let us know elsewhere, and we’re keen on fixing them
Sometimes it’s a hard one to remember 😅
This is correct, we are independent and have been since all the way back in 2004, 8bn-page index and growing 😀
this is correct 😀
thanks a lot in advance, and fedi is where it’s at ! 💯
sorry to hear that; if you are using us any point in the future and want to flag this, we have a “submit feedback” button on pages, this is a really useful thing to do for us, as it helps us to identify results which are not so good :D
no hidden catches no
if you look at the repo they give thanks to:
“The commoncrawl organization for crawling the web and making the dataset readily available. Even though we have our own crawler now, commoncrawl has been a huge help in the early stages of development.”
There is nothing I can find which says how much of the index is CC and how much is their own; if there’s a decent amount of CC, this is originally for researchers etc. it’s not the best resource in the world for a search index: https://commoncrawl.org/
That being said, as an independent search engine, it’s always good to see people take on the massive task of actually building an index, not becoming a proxy.
we’re gettin’ censored here 🫠
let us know if you find anything which could be better also, we’re always looking for ways to improve
