  • Like it’s just copy and paste

Depending on the app, it’s more than just copy paste…

Tons of apps (specifically web browsers) love to copy over formatting which, if supported by the receiving app (like a chat thread) will add the extra shit to it. I deal with this constantly at work, because it can be a toss up in if the chat/word processor I’m using will take the link I copied, or if it will post it as a link with the title of the tab as the link text.

Aggravating as fuck, and why I have N++ up on my work machine at all times so I can destroy any formatting and ensure what I send is what I want.

  • I think I’ve booted my windows install maybe two or three times after getting things setup on my Bazzite box, and each time was desperation because I couldn’t get something working on a time crunch (like my microphone no longer working before a telehealth appointment) and most of the time it’s user error (like the audio profile being switched so the mic wasn’t enabled for some reason).

Honestly, the only complaint I have is that periodically flat/snap apps (idr offhand) don’t want to open and I have to reboot a couple times before they do. Can’t say the same for my windows installs…

  • I would love an AI that was personalized to me and could answer the questions I want rather than shitting out generic shit that barely applies to my question. Something that knows me enough to help me with all the shit I don’t remember or have the energy to make myself start. That’s something I’ve dreamed about ever since I saw it in scifi media.

But I want to OWN and CONTROL the data and the way the AI handles the data. Unfortunately I don’t have the hardware to make them run very well, so I don’t really bother. Corpo AI is just opening your shirt and telling them where to swing the golf club.

My manager loved the shitty review I gave last year, because I bitched about workload/work life balance/manpower issues we had, and those are topics he commiserates with us on regularly. Upper management is lucky to find their asshole with a map, flashlight and guide, so many people have to break out the crayons before they stop eating and listen.

  • It is unreasonable to expect users to understand.

Or read, be it app popups or error messages. Or learn how to use tools that have been in place for years. Or take basic responsibility for their inability or unwillingness to learn and understand.

At some point, saying “it’s unreasonable to expect the user to understand something” is itself unreasonable. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in IT for like 20 years, but I have minimal sympathy for people who choose not to understand the basic utilities that they have to interact with for their jobs that have been in place for a long time. At the very least, you should know how file management works if you’re making files as part of your job, and that you don’t just delete files from your system, especially important business files…

  • It is unreasonable to assume you can delete a file from a sync app’s cloud dashboard and not expect that the deletion would be synced to the device.

I get that OneDrive is a mediocre product that gets forced on end users, but so many people turn their brains off and just try to kill it with fire instead of thinking through their actions before making rash decisions. Deleting it from the OneDrive directory is marginally less rash, but again, people delete files without validating the original is where they thought it was.

  • Because they don’t know how to use it properly, or intentionally use it wrong and complain when they lose data.

I’m not going to defend one drive in the slightest, because it irritates the shit out of me. But reading through this thread is giving me flashbacks to end user support and listening to old people not understanding why they’re causing their own problems. Like the number of times I’ve seen ‘it appeared in one drive and I didn’t like it so I deleted it and now my data is gone, what the hell’ both in this thread and irl is nuts…
