When I was younger and made next to nothing, I ended up in the emergency room with a bill I couldn’t possibly afford to pay. I called up the billing dept and told them about my financial situation and they told me to contact Health Quest so I qualify for a discount. It was relatively easy and not only did it erase my previous debt but it gave me a 0% liability for any hospital fees for the next 6mos. The funny thing was that the hospital ended up selling my my debt to collections by that point so every time they called id fax them a copy of a letter and id never hear from them again and after a few times of them selling this debt to other collectors it just got dropped. This was in upstate NY in like 2010 so YMMV.
I was an early Reddit adopter and can remember how lonely it felt back then. It took years but it got better in ways and worse in others. I believe in Lemmy because it isn’t susceptible to the pressures of a company trying to be profitable. Sure it’ll have its own challenges but I’ve personally had enough of idiot CEOs running social websites into the ground.
America just doesn’t have a culture where the older generations leave things better than they found it. Boomers are generally (but not always) selfish and entitled. They hoarde wealth and vote against anything that jeopardizes it because they feel they worked so hard for it. Even if that thing could positively impact their children or grandchildren. All while telling people working 2+ jobs just to afford food and housing that they’re lazy.
If anything, the media has always catered to boomers and shit on millennials. A lot of millennials have boomer parents as well.
