Yeah this has been the most reliable method for me. They’ll usually tout endorsements and those folks are usually easier to get a read on. Otherwise, try to find news stories or blue voter guides that mention them.

Another reason not to use their platform
Yeah they can improve their UX all they want but since their co-founder is part of DOGE and wants to mess with social security, it makes choosing alternatives easier.
+1 for Shark. Bought one several years ago without thinking much about it. It still works just as well as when I got it despite handling a pretty heavy workload. My dog sheds profusely and tracks in stuff from the yard constantly and we also use it on the cars.
Visit some of the National Parks, aka America’s best idea.
Some amazing ones (they’re all amazing, tbh) in no particular order:
At this stage in life, Infinite Jest and A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again.
For comics, I really liked Calvin and Hobbes.
Decent at some and a beginner at others. Tbh, I have more hobbies than time to practice and really get good at all of them. So progress is slow, but I enjoy each one of them and don’t want to give up any just yet. Guess I’m taking the scenic route to mastery, maybe by the time I retire I’ll be really cooking. And if not, I still would consider it time well spent.
In addition to self-hosting, I’ll throw out a few other alternatives:

DRM-free is important IMO because otherwise you’re at the mercy of the platform and if the company ever changes its Terms of Use or wipes your account, you lose your purchases. Amazon have remotely deleted books from users’ libraries in the past or replaced them with modified copies (e.g. Roald Dahl books). Kindle announced last month they won’t let you download your eBooks via USB so it’s possible Audible could see changes for the worse in the future as well.
He’s more of a meat popsicle
One terrible combo is infinite scroll plus links in the footer (Bing does this, if you needed another reason not to use that site). I think pagination is generally a better pattern, since you can link to a specific page.
Also lack of back button functionality and having your state reset on refresh are also pet peeves.
OfferUp and craigslist can be decent for local stuff depending on your area
Lots of blinking geocities and angelfire sites. Waiting for NetZero dial up to noisily connect. Buffering music and video clips.
Remember when they removed “don’t be evil” from their code of conduct back in 2018
I’m also holding out for a compact flagship (with a headphone jack and SD card slot) but things have been pretty bleak. Settled on the Sony Xperia 5 line. While it’s not small, it’s narrow enough to be used with one hand and checks all the other boxes.
Other models I’ve looked at were the Asus Zenfone 10, Jelly Max, and Galaxy.
“Correo de las brujas” translates to “the witches’ mail” and means gossip or rumors. Kind of like “heard it through the grapevine” or a “a little birdie told me”
yeah, I’m actively avoiding products that tout AI. It’s a worse experience and my data gets used to train some model for some company’s enrichment.
Apple Intelligence too. Thankfully you can still disable it
After digging around, I’m going to try Tuta for email/calendar and Mullvad for VPN. Tuta’s €3 plan lets you have 15 additional addresses and 3 custom domains.
Anyone using a good proton drive alternative?
You can still cancel your subscription so that it won’t auto-renew in 2 years and it let’s you leave a comment when doing so if you want to voice any concerns.
Agree it’s dependent on your personal values and goals. I prefer environmental causes and also try to help smaller local animal rescues because they’re often run on shoestring budgets so a little goes a long way, whereas bigger non-profits have access to more resources.
Would recommend researching whatever you end up choosing. Many charities spend a lot of money on executive pay or marketing vs. core programs. I’ll usually check annual reports for budgets or see if they’re on Charity Navigator.
