white background with black text is pretty much the default everywhere and I think always has been, so specifying those colors is redundant (and breaks night mode, though I don’t think that was a thing back when it was designed)

      breaks night mode

I’m trying to think which night mode you are talking about.

The Dark mode setting in Falkon just did the dark mode thing that it does.
Dark Reader in Firefox also did its thing and made it dark. I had to disable it to see the white.

      So maybe some other browser?

You can theoretically change the default colours for a lot of things in the Firefox settings. (I believe at least text and links but I assume the BG would work too)
