I’m using an ASUS ExpertBook B9 with an i7-1165G7, no dedicated GPU. I always need to switch to a performance profile in order to run games. This works fine on Windows 10 but when trying the performance power profile on an Ubuntu 24.04.3 live USB I do not hear any difference in fan speed, presumably because GNOME’s power profile feature doesn’t work with my hardware.
Is there any other way I can increase fan speed before playing games and then bring them back down to normal when I’m done gaming? I asked about this on Ubuntu’s forum but got no response.
ASUS laptops are notorious for this. So much so there are many projects to help make it better.
See if your model is in this one: https://github.com/dominiksalvet/asus-fan-control
Thanks for the suggestion! It looks like my model hasn’t been tested yet. I’m also not very technical so installing and using this software (especially on a live USB) seems like it’d be a bit tricky. Are you aware of any other similar programs?
Search on GitHub directly so something like: ASUS fan control
Also, just because your specific model isn’t listed doesn’t mean it won’t work since many of them are similar. If you need a GUI, you may want to try one of the other suggestions instead, but in my experience, youll have more effective results with these GitHub projects that target ASUS laptops specifically.
Software fan control?
Why not just set your fan curves in UEFI?
Or try Cooler Control.
Pretty sure power profiles are just for power/battery/CPU/APU/iGPU power use/limits. Perhaps kernel’s governor settings even.
Why not just set your fan curves in UEFI?
That only really applies to custom built desktops. Almost no oem machines give you any real options in the bios. Outside of maybe gaming laptops.
Oh dam. 🫠.
I use LACT. My use case is just to adjust the fan curve to keep the fans constantly running, since I hate the sound of them starting and stopping all the time.
Whenever I run into a question like this I like to ask the experts at onlyfans.com
