A Pennsylvania man who was recently exonerated after spending more than four decades behind bars has now been taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) and faces possible deportation to India.
Earlier this month, Centre county’s district attorney dismissed murder charges against 64-year-old Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam. However, shortly after his exoneration, Vedam was detained by ICE based on a 1988 deportation order tied to his now-vacated convictions.
I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but a lot of the world’s major cities and economies would grind to a halt if you magically removed cocaine and speed from the planet. Hallucinagens have aided in scientific discovery by helping people make connections they would never otherwise think of, not to mention the benefits of microdosing for mental health reasons. Does marijuana benefit some states but not others due to varying legality? Do legal drugs necessarily benefit society? What is the societal benefit of alcohol, or nicotine?
Whether a drug is legal or illegal is largely due to political posturing and nothing to do with societal or health benefits. And before you think I’m pro legalising everything, I believe highly addictive and debilitating drugs are the ones that should illegal or at least controlled. Ice, heroine, and (currently legal) opioid-based pain killers to name a few.
