I’m a Western leftist, and neither of these positions represent me. I do know people who are represented by one or the other, but I don’t know anyone who is both. Are you sure you’re not just conflating the loudest voices as being from the same people?

It might be my biased sample from the people I interact with IRL (I live in Spain) and on the internet, but out of all self-declared leftists and progressives, a vast majority support Luigi and use slogans like “eat the rich” while repelling any repression from Actually Existing Socialist states.

The landlord is not “as” rich as a health insurance CEO so they’re seen as “one of us” by liberals. They literally only see how much money someone has when determining good or evil, any kind of class theory is totally lost on them. It’s also why they think there are “good” police officers just because they don’t kill people for sport, or that “mom and pop” small business owners exploiting minimum wage labour is somehow different from corporations doing it.
