As an aside, “kill the guy with the ball” is apparently ok. It turns out I was woke even when a kid - “smear the queer” felt wrong even when I didn’t know what that meant. But killing is fine?
It’s a multiplayer death match game mode where one player has the ball or skull or whatever and all the other players try to kill that player. Whoever does gets the ball and repeat till game is over, whoever had the ball longest wins. Kids also used to play a variation during recess where one kid would have the ball and the others would try to tackle them to steal the ball. Same rules, whoever had the ball longest wins. It would get pretty violent at times. But it was often called things like “smear the queer” or other euphemisms for hate crimes because the Midwest is bigoted as fuck.

The game “smear the queer” was not confined to the Midwest.
