OP, how dangerous do you think compared to a wooden pipe it is
a) according to your education and
b) after 3 minutes of research?
That’s nothing. They used to put the stuff in cigarette filters.

Asbestos is an awesome material, until you break it apart and the dust enters your lungs. Before that, asbestos is actually safe to use. So depending on how the pipe looks like, you could still use it.
They made cafeteria trays with it, all sorts of stuff.
Black tar under floorboards of old houses has it oftentimes too, but does not go airborne so is not dangerous.
Asbestos is pretty soft, I’d be worried about damaging it when cleaning. Though that’s the stoner in me who uses metal tools to clean her pipes, I’m sure there are softer tools, perhaps… Pipe cleaners?
AFAIK asbestos was always mixed with another component, as asbestos is basically just lots of small fibers. So depending on what you mix it with, it can be soft or hard.
I was thinking that pipe had asbestos inside, with some more normal material on top.
I prefer fiberglass insulation
“Now with extra cancer!”
Russian roulette, but all the cylinders are loaded.
So just regular suicide.
Russian roulette with a semi-automatic.
Didn’t a guy win a Darwin Award for that?
That just means it chambers new rounds automatically. You still have to pull the trigger for every shot.
You always pull the trigger in russian roulette. That’s the entire point. Which is why semi-autos can’t work. Or, rather, work all too well.
Touché. You still have to chamber the first round though, so a person would have to be exceedingly stupid to do this.
I just often see people talking about semi-auto as if they think it means fully-auto, so I was confused on the other commenter’s point at first…
When you want to be sure tobacco is the healthiest thing you’re smoking
I think this can be improved by adding Kents famous micronite filter.
spoiler
The “Micronite filter” in Kent cigarettes contained a mixture of crimped crêpe paper and compressed blue asbestos, the most carcinogenic type of asbestos.
Cancer diagnosis any% hasn’t been the same since
I heard it’s not good for your health.
Oh and it’s hardly used I see! hmm…
If you smoke from this you get the final boss of lung cancer.
if you are going to die do it like a boss
Am I the only one who has a STRONG desire to try this out
Asbestos pipe isn’t necessarily as dangerous as it sounds. I don’t know how it reacts with fire (other than not burning), but asbestos in itself isn’t dangerous - it’s only when you breathe the dust that it becomes a problem.
The entire exterior sheathing of my house is asbestos. I’m literally sitting inside an asbestos box right now.
Asbestos pipe isn’t necessarily as dangerous as it sounds. I don’t know how it reacts with fire.
You should have just started with the later.
There’s always a non zero chance you’re going to breathe in some asbestos as the protective layer breaks down. And it will breakdown one way or the other.
The mechanics of smoking a pipe involve scraping accumulated ash from the bowl and scowering the stem. There is zero chance this thing isn’t insanely dangerous to smoke.
This.
It’s a case of " A little knowledge is a dangerous thing " combined with " The difference between theory and practice, is that in theory there is no difference between theory and practice "
- If you only know “asbestos is bad!” this is obvs dangerous
- If you know “inhaling asbestos fibers is bad” this is maybe NBD
- If you’ve ever smoked a pipe often enough to clean it, this is obvs dangerous
(and besides smoking is pre-industrial barbaric; vaping is an elegant weapon for a more civilized age)
I’m stealing that theory and practice quote. That’s great.
I stole it too, enough decades ago that I forget who I heard it from. I think it may have been an old grizzled Chem Engineering professor my first semester of college
It is the dust or small fibers that are inhaled that are problematic, they scar lung tissue and aren’t easily expelled or at all by the body. Asbestos is a natural silicate mineral and was used as a fire retardant since it doesn’t burn and withstands high temps.
Not was, still is. Lots of industrial furnaces still use asbestos insulation it’s just not a residential use.
Flame retardant good
Cancer? Yeah, you’re probably the only one with a strong desire to try it out.
At least it’s the best asbestos.
“Ceci n’est pas une pipe”
More like “N’utilisez pas ce pipe”
solid form asbestos isnt dangerous , that in makeup is another story.
