We have a breakdown here
https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/for-users/privacy-security
I can see your IP and it looks like we’re twinsies … we both have 127.0.0.1
i mean reddit admins can see your ip too, and they are probably selling your behavior data and training ai with it.
instance admins have your ip & data but i’m not aware of any that’s actively selling it.
Other users cannot. Your instance admin can obviously see it if they want. Then, it depends on the settings of your instance if all media downloads from other instances are proxied through your instance (hiding your IP from other instance admins) or not. I’m not sure if it’s enabled by default or not.
Generally it’s hidden, but there are a number of caveats as JRaccoon says.
It’d be good to know which instances proxy images and which don’t. It’d also be nice if some of this was controlled by your client if using an app.
It’s also fairly easy to end up on another instance. And any articles you click on will take you to a domain that collects your IP.
Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.
I don’t know about IP addresses, but I see London, I see France, I see golden_king’s underpants!!!
As far as I understand it, only your instance can see your IP. users cannot, and other instances cannot.
