Download your copies of wikipedia as much and as often as you can in the next few years … it’s all either going to get diluted, debased, dumbed down or sections of it deleted as time goes on. The private sector and private enterprises have been wanting to get rid of it for years. The only way we can really protect it is if we all get our own current copy that has currently not been too affected too much.
So life if I wanted to download all the TEXT from the site now (obviously media like images and such will ballon to size) how much we talking…? Internet articles vary between 20Gb and 418TB…
Current English text only looks like 24.7GB.
I heard the english version with images sits at around 110GB. Haven’t verified myself though.
Well, there are options. The size of the complete database with all revision history is going to be up there. Especially if you include the non-english databases. 985TB across all of wikimedia commons with all images, video, and other files as if June 2026.
The compressed English text files are much smaller, but don’t include images or videos or such.
I’m having issues finding the size of just the current revision of the English database. I have the download links, but without giving it a go, I can’t seem to tell you the size.
