I use those to train my AI though. It’s not piracy if there’s money.
“Sonarr has escaped containment 😱!!!”
It was openai or meta that claimed because they didn’t seed the torrent that it wasn’t really piracy.
So piracy only starts becoming bad when it takes the form of communism/socialism lol.
The theft for a major corperation? Thats just good ol reliable capitalism.
Non of the people pirating content have money to buy more stuff. These tens of billions they talk about don’t exist.
Non of the people pirating content have money to buy more stuff
How DARE you!
My piracy is morally; not financially driven
Mine is accessibility driven.
Oh, wanted to watch that series from last year to end? Too bad, it’s gone now.
My wife and I have a game we play sometimes. We pick a title, and then we have a sort of race: can we find a way to watch something the “right” way before we are able to torrent it?
Mine’s mostly financial, my moral objection is to streaming shows where, even if you have money, you can’t buy the show on DVD.
Though I wonder if streaming legally and ripping illegally would be the next viable option. Netflix’s 720p streams are largely unprotected.
If you’re using a semi colon, you need to make sure it’s a stand alone sentence on both sides.
If you’re using standalone as an adjective, you need to make sure it’s hyphenated or a single word.
We standing on principal over here. I’ll continue supporting indie devs and small projects but mega corp has too much and won’t be getting anything from me.
I would be surprised if most US politicians are capable of understanding the concept of duplicating files on a computer
“…it’s more like a series of tubes.”
You are correct. It’s like expecting car salesmen to be able to understand how to do brain surgery.
Most politicians are failed lawyers. And if they are too incompetent or corrupt to be representing people or entities in court, they sure are hell shouldn’t be making calls about anything in society or in the political realm. And that obviously includes technology.
Remember when late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens described (with great confidence) that the Internet “is like a series of tubes”? Classic example of their wider incompetence right there.
that guy made ytmnd twice as entertaining back in the day
You think they care about things like facts, or logic? No. This is, and always has been about control.
Even the business side of things know piracy doesn’t actually hurt business, it helps it. They’ve conducted studies on this since 2004. They found that the vast majority of pirates are actually the biggest spenders. They found more often than not a pirate will download a movie, or an album or a game, or whatever. Then within a month buy that same thing they just pirated.
Thats the reason you used to see these record labels try to stop piracy back in the days of kazaa and napster, and limewire. There used to be lawsuits where they’d sue some household for 20 million dollars. Knowing they don’t have it. Well what ended up happening is they ended up suing this elderly man who had no idea what limewire was. He didn’t know how to use a computer. And the only one who used the computer was the 8 year old boy, who now had to live with his grandpa, because both his parents were killed by a drunk driver. Now this record label was trying to put his grandfather 20 million in debt. For someone who had no idea who the black eyed peas. When they kept asking him about it, he asked why they kept asking him about soup if this was about music theft.
As the case went on, it was revealed that between his parents, and other family members, he had a cd collection, including the albums accused of stealing, worth over $5,000 worth of cds.
The whole thing turned the public against record labels, and painted them as the bad guys for trying to ruin peoples lives over music. To this day I haven’t heard of another time they tried that tactic.
And the republicans know this.
You have to remember one thing. The cruelty is the point. It doesn’t need to make sense. It just needs to punish their enemies. And at times even punish their own base. I saw a story last night where a guy who voted for trump was complaining that insulin used to be $6, and now it’s $80 under trumps new plan. And he said “I didn’t think it would happen to ME!”
And thats where we are right now. Just leaving the fuck around stage. Now entering the find out portion of our journey.
Mine is mostly convenience. I’m not going to try to figure out which of a dozen streaming sites have a show or movie that I want to watch, and manage all those subscriptions. I could probably figure out a way to afford them, but my time is more valuable.
Thank GOD! ONLY Billionaires should be Allowed to Pirate EVERYTHING EVER MADE!
-Republicans!
how do they plan to enforce this with foreign VPNs?
Don’t try to explain technology to them. It won’t work.
You see, it’s a series of tubes…
Are you sure it’s not a big truck?
they’ll try to pass it anyway. if republicants lose majority, it’ll be a horrific couple of months as they try to ram and cram every piece of shit legislation they can think of through before the new session starts.
Make those illegal too probably
At a guess, tariffs. “Tariffs” is also the answer to all the other questions.
Oh, I run a new company called FaceMeta, and this is all being stolen for “training” - therefore perfectly 100% legal according to capitalism
Piracy keeps the poors occupied and busy so they don’t riot. There’s no blood left to squeeze from that rock, they’re not going to buy streaming. Games are in decline as systems die of go outdated, and corporate erodes the quality of development.
They’re idiots if they push this bill in earnest.
Look what happened the last time people had too much time on their hands (Covid). And everyone has a lot more to pissed about, now.
Your last paragraph crossed my mind recently as the oil prices really start to spiral out of control. There were so many protests bordering on riots because people were stuck at home due to covid - now we’re already hearing news that truckers are starting to sit idle instead of driving at a loss.
Imagine how much free time and how much anger everyone will have when the economy grinds to a halt from product shortages all over the country.
I’d love to think people would’ve protested racism and gross police incompetencies ending in death regardless, but it’s highly unlikely.
Even the storming of the Bastille had to wait for nice weather.
Locking away the poors’ access to distraction could very well be that “nice weather”.
I’ve heard plenty of times in the past that truckers will strike over this or that, and I’d like to actually see it happen. It would stop everything in three days or so.
Usually what happens is we get a couple of videos of truckers going slow and blocking the highway, but not much else.
"Issa argued that online piracy helps fund terrorist groups and other criminal networks. ". I never thought of AI companies as terrorists, but it’s a good label for the harm it’s caused
Um… Piracy funds terrorist groups? Handing out software for free earns money?
Well, technically it can, in that some piracy installs things that make them money, and that can go for their private gain or their pet projects. Kinda like how google offers you free products that make money for them.
the ironic part of this is in some cases it can. Pirate broadcasts and media boxes are becoming increasingly common to have subscription models for way cheaper than you would having the traditional streaming subs.
We are in a world where even piracy is starting to cost money in some cases fair cause convienence, but its still weird to think about. Everything always goes full circle.
That’s been the talk track since back on VHS. Apparently copying that tape from Block Buster went straight into buying drugs and weapons.
There was a very weird PSA video I think they put out there at the beginning of some of them.
Edit, yup: https://youtu.be/qcrrZ8X3UKM
It’d really be nice if “Huh. This protects corporate interests more than taxpayer interests. Denied.” was a thing in government.
Then they’d try to get around it by paying lots of taxes!
“Site-blocking orders force any service provider, from residential broadband providers to global DNS resolvers, to disrupt traffic from targeted websites simply accused of copyright infringement.”
I know a few sites I can accuse of copyright infringement… (x, M$, FB, etc.)
I have a seedbox in a country that gives no fucks, so I’ll just use a DNS provider in a country that gives no fucks. You can make it harder, but you can’t make it impossible.
And it’s not like it’s so much harder to press a few extra buttons. Bonus: you’re safer online, so if anyone wants to go down the road, they’ll just be safer online.
They’re all a bunch of fucking idiots, the people making these bills.
Wish people would realize they are NOT idiots.
This erodes privacy and allows character assassinations on anyone who wants to be safe and/or private by using those VPN that do not comply. Is your mega ISP really going to stand up for your rights under this? Can you really get a new ISP at the “press of a few buttons”?
You aren’t the only one here not understanding how “this doesn’t directly affect me” bc you have the technical skills to avoid it. It does affect you, even if only by the chilling effect of it being more difficult to discuss online.
Well, they are idiots, for “as long as men die, liberty will never perish”. But that doesn’t mean they are harmless, we do need to push back against anything like this, not just allow it to happen because “I can press a few buttons”
Peer to peer it is.
Then they’ll make certain ports illegal
Couldn’t you use a VPN to VPN to another country that doesn’t block piracy sites, then use a VPN to pirate?
America’s small businesses cannot afford to be treated as ‘acceptable collateral damage’ for multibillion-dollar entertainment and sports industries.”
“some of you will not make it but that’s a sacrifice i’m willing to make”
Like if they do this, I’m just not going to buy the stuff unless getting. I WOULD buy ebooks but most are DRM locked and can’t be loaded onto my e-reader, for example. Most the games I grab haven’t been sold for over 10 years by their publishers.
Most authors will GLADLY sell you DRM-free EPUBs if you ask them.
ebook sales are some of the worst payouts for authors so whenever they can, they sell them directly. Many list them on e.g. Patreon for a monthly fee, or offer a form of direct purchase, because all that money goes directly to them.
I wish so bad more people understood this shit. Our brain dead society can literally only process “bUY On tEH aMAZoON??!!”
People now are idiots and can’t even search the web to find where to buy a product (usually cheaper directly from the manufacturer if they do shipping), they sure as hell aren’t gonna find an author on patreon.
VPNs?
… ok good luck
Legally mandated return to office.
