I reject the notion of “non-sea otters”! Enhydra are the weirdos among the Lutrinae, and the default assumption of otter should be Lutra, Lontra, Aonyx etc.
Where I am, we have tons of river otters. We see them rarely even just when looking out our window. They’re far more “normal” here than sea otters. If anything, I’d be concerned if I saw a sea otter over here.
I don’t know if I’d say one or the other is weird, though.
