If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last couple decades, it’s that about 1/4 of people are thoughtless fools, easily caught up in whatever bullshit is shoved in their face the loudest.
Quiet imprisonment of their leaders for non-political reasons (I am sure the CRA can find dirt on them) works much better. Even better if they get in unfortunate accidents.
If you’re on socials, bullshit is being shoved in your face. Is your palate so refined that you avoid it entirely? Or, like violence, is the seed of foolishness in all of us?
Is your palate so refined that you avoid it entirely?
Anything with an algorithm, yeah. Lemmy is all that I am on.
And it’s not so much “refinement of palate” as it is simply making room in my head for my own thoughts, and ensuring nothing gets into my head without me having had the opportunity to think about it and fact check if need be.
And yeah, I do a LOT of fact checking. Staying off social media keeps it at a manageable level for me.
Sure, so is humanity itself. Show me anyone that is free of bias, and I’ll show you a magical unicorn.
But things move slowly enough here that I can listen, take my time, consider carefully, and fact check. There’s also not nearly as much of a bot problem here: chances are excellent I am speaking with a human being as flawed as I am.
The point is not to isolate oneself from differing viewpoints, even biased ones; the point is to isolate oneself from propaganda: the presentation of faux “information” that is either truth-lite or truth free, and always served with a dose of something viscerally triggering.

South Park called it
The US confederacy has spent decades ensuring their entire political process heavily favors that very very dumb 1/4 of the people.
It’s closer to a third. In the last ten years trumps idiots have had like a +- 33 percent locked in like a bunch of child molesting Mot worshipers.
It’s not a coincidence that that percentage matches unusually well with the number of Americans who can’t read past a sixth grade level…
They can still be used as a casus belli
We should probably deport the traitors to US then
Sorry, no vacancy. We are full on traitors at the moment.
Genuinely I believe we should treat them like the USSR treated the Kulaks and relocate them to a desolate area of the the northwest territories
That’s an example of immediate casus belli.

There’s a ton of bias here too, gotta be careful with that.
