All Trump did was expose the fact that it always was open for someone with a criminal background to hold office. They didn’t change the qualifications for him. There never was a rule against people with criminal records holding office. It was just considered common sense that people wouldn’t elect someone with serious crimes on their record, but it turns out that was wrong. There is indeed nothing to stop other felons, rapists, and traitors from getting elected

It’s been like that for a long time. America is not the way it is because of Trump. Trump is the way he is because of America. 70 million people voted for him, and more than that didn’t vote at all.

America has been nothing more than a criminal enterprise since Kennedy got shot.

Trump just made it so obvious the rest of the world can’t ignore it anymore.

Exactly this. I can’t remember where I saw it, but some years back - during his first stint - I saw an interview with a panel of Trump supporters. They were asked “If Trump shot an unarmed man dead in the street, would you still support him?”. One of the women responded “What did the guy do to get shot?” and everyone else nodded in agreement.

Reminds of how MAGA people are always claiming the media “isn’t telling the whole story” when ICE commits atrocities. They’re convinced the regime can do no wrong and anyone they hurt deserved it

A felony has never barred you from the position and that is by design. Literally nothing to do with Trump

Because in the past, a convicted felon’s political career would be over. Gary Hart’s run for President in 1984 ended when he was rumored to have had an affair with an adult woman.

Meanwhile, Trump is fucking kids and had had multiple affairs on multiple wives.

That’s besides the point. It’s explicitly allowed to prevent the weaponization of felonies against political opponents.

            …???

Instead of focusing on Trump, think about how badly that would have been abused. The ruling party would find bullshit charges on their political opponents.

It also doesn’t make any sense to outright bar people who broke the law because a lot of times people run for office to change the law

    It’s normalized, that’s for sure.

Rapists becoming president is now normalized.

Felons becoming president is now normalized.

    Treason is now normalized.

Let’s see how that goes for the future of our nation.

I’m not from the US, but I am interested to know if Benjamin Franklin falls on this category? What is his crime?

Precedent isn’t everything and if we don’t burn this fucker down and start over, we don’t have a chance in hell.
