Apple has never cost less than most competitors. And its OS has always cost more than free alternatives.

When was apple ever does more cost less. It was always does less costs more. Up until their M1 series release where they actually started having decent hardware. Even then though im still pretty sure they only won in perf per watt and still lost in perf per dollar.

Last new Mac I bought was the 2006 Mac Pro. The first x86 tower. I still consider it a good value because it was modular and upgradable and I did do many repairs and upgrades to it over the 10 years I ran the thing. I wasn’t impressed with the cylinder, so my next machine after that was a hackintosh and I’m still using the hardware form that even though I stopped dual booting when Apple dropped 32bit support.

My last (and first) was a mac-vm 😁 Wouldn’t personally touch those things. Or only offline or behind a firewalled router. Same as google or microslop.

Back then (even before their does-more-cost-less ads) they were just a joke. Today they’re…well…🤷🏻

which period “back then” are you referring to? 1976 maybe? the Apple I was affordable (at just $666.66 😄) compared to other kits at the time, but the Apple II (1977) cost more than twice what a TRS-80 did and afaik since then Apple has always positioned itself as a premium brand.

i don’t recall them ever having a comparative-price-related marketing slogan or campaign, but maybe i’m forgetting something?

The first apple device I recall was the Apple II.

Please help me out: I can’t recall a single thing where Apple ever was cheaper than the competition.

Their selling point was “works better” and then became “everyone be different (in the same way though!)”.

What set their devices apart was the smoothness in which everything worked. First the devices and later their ecosystem. I despise vendor lock-in and never went for them because of that but I can see the appeal.

Price though? This meme is the first time I’ve heard of that argument, someone please help me out.

It’s not controversial, it’s just wrong. Apple has always been more expensive. And it has always tried to block its users from knowing anything about the internals of computers. Part of their whole selling point was that it was easier to use. The way they went about it is IMO bad, but that’s a different discussion.

For real. I’ve been around computers for 40 years and I don’t recall Macs ever being anything but overpriced, overhyped machines. Regardless of their inner qualities.

      Yeaaah, that’s bait.

Having used a Mac in a professional technical field for almost 20 years these threads are always fun. “It’s locked down! It’s an OS for babies! You can’t do anything with it! Mac users are stupid noobs!”

Guess the 75-80% of other folks I work with are stupid noobs for using a Mac and never did anything because it was so locked down.

Well, you either care for freedom and privacy, or you don’t. MacOS might have its benefits (and surely beats Microsoft), but the price is too high. And I don’t mean the financial one.

Personally, I’ve yet to see someone that really KNOWS computers but prefers Apple. Those, that just want a device that works without magic, are usually the ones going for it. To a very special kind of people it’s even a brand-thing.

Well, then others made that decision for you. If you like Mac or not stopped mattering then 😉

Luckily in these few times I tried working, I had the choice. Would’ve quit if there were privacy - concerns, though I might be a bit picky with my data…

I will ad that lately people working on Limux Machines has become much more common. However, they still make me do the demos because every screen sharing app works on my Mac, no matter what the client is using.

                (Plus I’m good at demos.)

Well of course they work on Mac. It’s a closed system, a walled garden of compability. Its main selling-point for the technically challenged.

I would not really see that a a benefit though, as it’s merely a symptom of an illness, even if inherently not bad by itself. If one doesn’t care, then there’s no problem at all and mac wins. Same as windows and android. Then it comes down to taste in UI or favourite tools. Or even “the brand” for the intellectually challenged.

all the same stuff? it’s bsd under the hood. it literally functions just like linux. I run cachy on my desktop and while kde plasma is great, mac is fantastic as well. about the only thing better on linux is that I can game.

I’ve done everything from Java test fixtures to Golang app development to building POC architectures in Docker. Right now I’m testing database failover scenarios in Kubernetes.

All the developers at the place I work have MBPs. Apple silicon and long battery life are pretty great. I think people forget that Mac had a package manager long before winget existed and that a lot of unix code runs fine on macOS
