The whole premise of this ship’s voyage was for people to leave the US for duration of Trump’s presidency, so it’s basically a ship full of people who fucking hate him.

It’s an interesting concept, for anyone who actually read the article, and a little commentary on the state of affairs plus what led people to adopt the idea of retirement on a cruise ship. It didn’t sound like anyone was upset about it, just happy to have the experience. It’s too bad cruises themselves are not exactly great

It is unclear how many were on board

There were reportedly around 200 passengers on board

They should have just read their own article to find the answers to their questions!

Not much “luxury” in a cruise if you get stranded in nowhereland, err, -sea.

If they don’t have money to fuel their ship, when will they run out of money to pay the crew, or to buy food?

A lot of those were likely assumed to be fixed costs. Obviously it was not an overwhelmingly successful business if they could not absorb the extra expenses, but according to the article fuel prices, which are likely one of their biggest variable expenses, had more than quadrupled. I’m not sure the margin cruises are making, but there are a lot of businesses closing because of fuel prices, so they’re not alone there.

This is a horrible way to deal with the issue though. I’m not sure what recourse the passengers have because they signed up for 3 years and only got 2, but I hope they are able to be made whole.

What’s with some of the really judgemental comments towards some people going on a cruise? Like what would you rather people do for a holiday

There’s a really big “blame the rich for everything” population here. You can kinda tell what political system they favour.

Quite possibly, although cruises don’t even cost that much if you compare them to other holiday options. Especially for what you get.

Was looking it up and if I drank more it would easily be worth it with the all inclusive drinks packages and cheaper than a lot of other “budget” holidays. But while I can happily drink over 5 pints on a rare occasion I don’t really want to every day for a week.

For comfortable western standards, we averaged about 30USD per night in Cambodia as a couple.

In Cambodia? Definitely. I haven’t been there recently though so I don’t have first-hand price references. I don’t know how these luxury cruise passengers are taking it, but I’d say there are definitely worse places to be stranded than on the shores of The Gulf of Thailand, next to a huge nature preserve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ream_National_Park

That message from the CEO… damn “you basically have about 7 hours to get all your stuff and get off our ship. Have fun in a foreign country!”

The company knew this was a failed business model and probably were bleeding money and this was the last straw.
