I’m not really a fan. They have a certain light taste of black pepper that ruins them for me. I guess I’m sort of like the cilantro-soap people.

Mangoes have a black pepper taste to you? I’ve heard of people not liking mangoes but that one is new. If they are unripe they have this kind of tree resin taste/aroma but even that varies across different types.

It’s not exactly black pepper. It’s like mangoes and black pepper share a something, and that’s enough to remind me of black pepper, if that makes sense.

This does mean I like it enough as an ingredient - for example, I would eat mango salsa.

Now I want to gather as many different mangoes as possible, pig out on them, and try to experience this for myself. So far I don’t think I know of anything with a taste I would associage with black pepper other than itself. Same with white. The red pepper variety that makes your mouth numb made me feel like I was almost reminded by something else, but I could never figure it out.

I’m also kind of wondering if anyone has done much research on how taste works for different people or different animals. I remember the tastes being associated with different zones on the tongue being taught in school which turned out to be bullshit.
