And people wonder why I say that he’s a shit choice for a presidential candidate. Things like this his calling the very concept of a wealth tax “bullshit”, his lacking response to those taking actions to expand the housing crisis, and his protection of convicted killer, PG&E, really should make it clear that, despite good things like Project Roomkey, he’s still thoroughly a neolib.

I wonder the same thing. A lot of the commenters seem to have read the headline alone, and assumed that the story is about Newsom trying to exile or jail homeless people, but that’s not what the article says. A few important points:

an executive order Thursday to direct state agencies on how to remove homeless encampments

The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in local hands.

Newsom has worked hard to address the issue. He threw all of his political weight behind a ballot measure earlier this year to allow the state to borrow nearly $6.4 billion to build 4,350 housing units, which passed with a razor-thin margin.

Lol… Median price is los angleles is 1 million.

That means half are sold under that price

House price inherently includes land value in it.

I don’t understand what point you are trying to make about land value.

A single housing unit might cost 5m due to it being in dtla. $ per housing unit isn’t a good metric to go by in California.

Homeless people and their advocates say the sweeps are cruel and a waste of taxpayer money. They say the answer is more housing, not crackdowns.

That’s not how things are done in this country. In the US, poverty is a crime. We have the second highest poverty rate, among OECD nations, and we have the world’s largest prison population. We have decided that is how we will handle the problem.

Bro… I am all about direct action ans personal responsibility but we can’t fucking donate our way out of homeless crisis.

This is a system issue, requires federal and state government solutoon and neither is willing to do anything about it

You got money to donate like that?

Most people don’t and people who do have the money are largely causing the issue.

I agree with sentiment, for example avoiding plastic while lobbying for restrictions. I just don’t think donating for homeless relief will do anything.

California approved 6.3 billion to build 4300 houses at USD1.5m per unit lol How much would we need to donate to his something like that?

Also, this is similar to when kids raise money to pay off the debts of poor friends to the school lol

I do donate actually, to two organizations in my state. Not huge amounts , but something comfortable for me and my finances.

I started during the pandemic when homelessness was more visible in my area and I watched the city make all the wrong moves despite my votes.

Don’t get me wrong I prefer all avenues of improving the problem should be pursued but I also admit fully that donating isn’t for everyone.
