    By the Saffir Simpson scale, the Cat 5 threshold is 157 mph sustained winds, and the proposed Cat 6 threshold was originally 180 mph, and more lately 192 to 195 mph sustained winds.

    Of course, this focuses on wind speed intensity, when more often the more damaging (to people and property) element is storm surge.

    … Which is currently estimated to be up to 15 feet near the center of the hurricane when it makes landfall as likely a Cat 3.

    EDIT: I am now seeing some meteorologists say it may make landfall as a Cat 4.
