Not trying to dismiss your sufferings but I still think our generation had it way better than our grandparents, and probably better than 90% of the people in the world if you live in an advanced economy. For instance my grandfather went through the bloodiest war in human history, a bloody civil war, and a famine that killed millions of people. The problem right now is getting all the negative information that you have no control over from the internet, that’s why I stay away from tuning into any news these days.

I only use it for cases where I don’t expect privacy like government websites. As soon as you open an account there they got all your info anyway.

I use Brave as a secondary browser mostly for government websites because sometimes my firefox privacy settings breaks them and since many of them are poorly designed a technical issue over your account may result in hours on the phone to resolve.

I hate meta and I actually went out of my way to get my family and friends off of their platforms, but in this case I don’t think they’re in the wrong. Even if we roll with the logic that they should be paying for these links, then what is wrong with them deciding to not profit off of the links now by not showing them? Isn’t that the right thing to do?

To each their own. Ideally no company should have those data that can be used for spying by any government. But if I have to choose, I personally fear government overreach more than anything else. We can agree to disagree here.

I’m glad that you brought up the problem of foreign propaganda. I firmly believe the government shouldn’t be there to tell me what kind of views I can and cannot see. Some exceptions already exist such as blatant calls for violence which we already have clear guidelines on. Other than that, government is in no place to regulate speech. What’s the point of beating Russia and China when we become just like them?

Well I don’t use TikTok and couldn’t care less if they get banned. If you actually read the bills that’s getting passed like the RESTRICT act in the US you’d realize it’s not about banning TikTok and it has numerous vague and concerning clauses that infringes on your privacy. My opinion is always have better privacy laws and enforce it equally on all companies. When my government blatantly tries to steal more of my data and pretend they’re actually doing me a favor I’d rather the foreign adversary have it for free.

This is actually what I wanted to say to a lot of people. During peace times, allowing a foreign adversary stealing your data is a lot less damaging to your personal freedoms than your own government stealing your data. We need to be wary every time when our own government tries to tries to introduces surveillance laws under the disguise of “national security”.

Well, in real life I probably do appear to be an autistic security nut to some. I don’t blame people from thinking this way because I came from that place too. You just don’t realize how important infosec is until you do.

I did actually manage to quit FB the website for the past two years and it was largely inconsequential, but if I quit Messenger right now I’d probably loose a good chunk of my contacts. I’m not ready to take that step yet.

I made the first step a couple years ago which was quitting FB the website, but I still have one foot in the swamp that is messenger. I’m still working on getting my parents onto signal, so far haven’t succeeded yet. Some people can quit cold turkey like what you did, but others like me take time.

I don’t think using sarcasm as means to express disagreement, and provide examples so that the other party could better understand your viewpoint should be seen as escalating conflict. The other gentleman’s statement although is something I disagree with, but still well with the boundaries of civil discussion, so I’m not seeing a need to report anything.

Well everyone that I have on messenger are people I met in real life, messenger is just my equivalent of text, I’d love them to all migrate to signal, but that’s easier said than done.

Agreed. By the same definition fb has been dying for almost a decade, but I’m still forced to use the messenger app since all my friends are on there.
