I was with my family (mom, cousins, etc etc) in Thailand this summer too and we didn’t see anything weird either, and the country, food and temples were amazing, and everything was very safe. (it was very nice to see my mom and aunt/uncles, on their 60s, visit such exotic place, they had a wonderful time)

But don’t get triggered, people that do memes like these are mostly teenagers that think that “old people” should just stay home. These people probably never went on vacation outside their country anyway, I always found out that people that have travelled abroad tend to be more open minded and do less generalisations.

The only tragedy here is if someone is not aware of the rat kids on the internet, and memes/ideas like this prevent them to travel and see there is world out there, and is not as painted in the internet, everything is way more normal.

So, if someone of any age reads this, I can’t talk for Philippines since I haven’t been there, but Thailand is amazing and not at all as painted here. Careful with the sun though, sunburns could be quite brutal.

So, if this is true and I understand correctly, it means that if I chose to use Xfce (as I do), I’ll have to hope really hard that zoom, skype, slack, discord… decide to provide support for not only linux,… but XFCE or give up and abandon XFCE? yeah f*** Wayland, they really didn’t think about the open source community when designing their solution. I don’t wat to even think of people that use other smaller desktop managers…

I mean, screen sharing is basic functionality these days, in the interview for my current job I needed to use… I think it was teams. Is not even something you can chose, is bad enough to be exclusive linux user as it is, always wondering if in such cases something will not work.

Honestly, long live Xorg. if deprecated and I have to switch to gnome/kde or lose functionality I might as well switch to windows after 20 something years of not using it.

I use xfce, I have nvidia card, I sometimes capture a video of my screen and I regularly share my screen. Didn’t even try.

I’ll use Xorg until its deprecated or Wayland offers me some benefit other than “is new and shiny and the internet told me is cool”

I also became a bit sceptical about it with so many open source projects and basic functionality not supporting it yet after sooo many years of “Wayland is here”… so yeah, I’ll wait until someone gets xorg from my dead cold hands 😁

also I don’t get how aggressive people get about what other people have in their desktop, dude let me live my linux life alone 🤷‍♂️

When I was in university (2002 or so) we had an “AI” lecture and it was mostly "if"s and path finding algorithms like A*.

So I would argue that us the engineers have been using the term to define a wider use cases long before LLM, CEO and marketing people did it. And I think that’s fine, as categorising algorithms/solutions as AI helps understand what they will be used for, and we (at least the engineers) don’t tend to assume an actual self aware machine when we hear that name.

nowadays they call that AGI, but it wasn’t always like that, back in my time it was called science fiction 😉

I already unsubscribed and start sailing when the account share thing happened, but people are willing to take anything these days… so good for netflix I suppose.

I know that everyone and their mom are in the hype train of AI, but we still don’t know if its here to stay or not. Basing your whole strategy on a tech hype trend to the point of antagonising google… seems a bit too far fetch.

sure today Reddit results are still a thing that makes sense, but is it really too big to fail? if they’re not in Google no significant amount of new users will sign up. between that, the exodus and other stuff wouldn’t the content rot relatively quickly?

on the other hand social sites have huge inertia (still surprises me how many people are in twitter), reddit bros probably just wants to sell high to retire and the stock market bros are the dumbest people with a gambling addiction anyway… so the move might work…

Man, I wish economy didn’t depend that much on the stock bros… reddit? IDGAF, they can succeed or fail, I don’t use it anyway, but the power these dumbs have globally is so scary.

hmmm… I’m pretty sure I’ve been around since before YouTube started and don’t have any idea, so I still think is the case.

I think people tend to not understand how big internet is, even back then. This makes it difficult to know which memes really made it all the way to become THAT popular (and even those are not know by everyone, some people just don’t follow memes)

The internet is wild, people spend most of their time in small echo chambers and they think that is the whole internet.

The stylisation works so well on my mind that it took me a bigger while than you think to figure out what the meme was about xD

thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it :-) . I have quite the opposite experience, as people I know like it are mostly cinema enthusiast and like it mostly for its cinematic features, definitely not a teaching film.

Maybe is a geographical thing, although to be fair I would never have a friend so full of himself as Tyler, so I may have a selection bias.

For me was the presentation of Marla that I remember the most, such interesting way of introducing a character.

sorry I wasn’t clear, my criticism wasn’t towards you not liking the movie, anyone have their own taste and there is nothing wrong with it, we all just want to enjoy things :-)

My problem was about you profiling people that do like the movie as “dudebros”, that wasn’t very nice IMHO

or, hear me out, movies don’t need to be lectures and is ok to just do something for the entertainment/artistry/visuals/storytelling of it.

I can tell you that I’m the opposite of what the movie depicts, I’m fragile, never been in a fight, I sincerely hope that will never be in one, I cried like a baby in ET or the time traveles wife, the Schindler’s list broke my heart, I dislike the dudebro dynamics, and I adore that movie. I also like horror movies as a genre and I don’t go around killing people.

It’s fine that you use movies as lectures of life and ethics, or that you don’t enjoy them if they don’t have a message that you agree with, but some people like them for other reasons, so please try not to profile people for what they like to watch.
