    Calling it the Gaza instead of just Gaza is an attempt to make it sound like it’s just a geographical region and not a nation. At least that’s how Ukraine phrased it when they tried to get us to drop the the.

    Idk how the Netherlands feels about that though

      Gaza is not a nation though? Palestine is.

      Is Manhattan a nation? Not trying to start shit but I don’t think the original post writer is trying to do what you’re suggesting.

      In case of Ukraine it’s specifically because the name translates to “borderland” which is interpreted as “the border regions of a larger entity” (an interpretation that they’d like to avoid for obvious reasons). The Netherlands are simply lower in elevation than other lands surrounding them.

      The etymology of “Gaza” seems unclear but it might come from positively connoted words like “strong, powerful, mighty” (source Wikipedia).
