Let’s say you have 800 friends. What service do you recommend to try to convince FB users to move ? This platform would have to have all the same functions, videos, pictures, events, pages, etc.

I know of nothing like this i could even suggest to friends to switch to (and there’s almost no way anyone actually would) but I am curious. I dont think it exists, likely purely of the cost to run such a platform without it being a data stealing cesspool like fb.

And dont say “the fediverse” because I hardly understand how it works myself, and the links are scary looking to my friends so that is a no go.

Can I just take this opportunity to vent, I’m so annoyed. My grandsons school closed due to the asbestos kinetic sand thing, you know how they informed everyone, and blindly expected every one to see it, exactly as it was released. I violently hate the fact schools and official places use Facebook for community noticeboards and communication tools. I appreciate your efforts.

Eta, my grandson is in my care, he’s asd lvl 3 and of course I turned up to take him to school, why couldn’t they just email or text. They can text you if you’re late dropping off etc.

Mind you, I have never in my life tried to use it, but my understanding is that is the Fediverse equivalent of FB. I’m mostly on Mastodon or Pixelfed, which are the equivalents of Twitter and Instragram.

Mate, I don’t believe in hell, but you just described it to a ‘T’. Good luck in your search!

My recommendation is to just stop using it and everyone else be damned.

You have 800 friends, do you actually talk to all 800 of them regularly? Are they actually friends or just people you kinda know who interact with you on Facebook?

I’d say text your actual friends or talk to them on whatever chat app you prefer, and ignore everyone else.

In June 2011, Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake jointly purchased the company for approximately $35 million.[16] On February 11, 2016, it was announced that Myspace and its parent company had been purchased by Time Inc. for $87 million.[17][18] On January 31, 2018, Time Inc. was in turn purchased by Meredith Corporation,[19] and later that year, on November 4, 2019, Meredith spun off Myspace and its original holding company (Viant Technology Holding Inc.) and sold it to Viant Technology LLC.[20]

Yes, but not a lot. I’m guessing around 5 million? (I say guessing because I can’t remember where I read it). They don’t seem to have a mobile app anymore (they used to).

MySpace and Friendi.ca seem to be your best options.

Edit: With a group of 800, you might want to consider hosting your own instance to alleviate the confusion of which/where to go (Friendica). You don’t need to do it yourself, @communick.news “provides managed hosting” and save yourself a headache.

My personal opinion: FB is bad not just because of who owns it or how it’s operated. The very concept is harmful. I grew up in the 90s before the web existed. All the stupid stuff I did and said stays where it belongs, haunting my memories when I lie a wake at 3 AM. Now along comes social media. You over share your life, and it’s all associated with your real name and real face and real phone number. It’s all out there, forever, for everyone to see. No thanks.

This platform would have to have all the same functions

This expectation comes from inertia, not need. No system, thing, or product can ever succeed at checking everyone’s little boxes from another product in a satisfactory way.

Also both you and your friends are older, different people now. The old magic will not come back. Figure out what you actually actually need and find something new that will be good at that.

Facebook was new and confusing once. If you can face that again, you’ll find beautiful things.

So everything other than Facebook is a no-go? You were given 3 alternatives and categorically rejected them all. It’S cOnFusINg sO iT’s A nO-Go. Well… Stay on FB then
