I’d like to counter with the example of Terminator, the original one was done almost entirely via guerilla filming and had a shoestring budget, seriously they made money on the nightclub scene because people just kinda started to show up to their illegal set since guerilla nightclubs were also a thing at the time. All it would take for a similar success is someone just kinda getting lucky and getting popular through word of mouth.
Hell even Star Wars had a fuck all budget initially and Lucas was 100 percent ready to just do a new hope and then switch over to books and comics, then it turned into a massive cultural success.
Apparently Lucas put it in the contract that he had the rights to any sequels and the studio was okay with that clause because they didn’t expect it to be successful enough to have sequels
If memory serves right he renegotiated at some point during filming to more or less retain all rights cause the studio thought it was going to be a flop, he even got the merchandise sales. I imagine those executives were on suicide watch pretty damned quick. Given how even during this lackluster Disney era Star Wars still generates an absurd amount of money through merchandise alone I suspect that has to be one of the biggest fuck ups in film rights period.
For an of-the-moment example, look at The Backrooms. Started as a series of YouTube videos some kid put together, now it’s a successful theatrical release with a sequel in development.
It’s not this generation’s Star Wars and as a horror property it doesn’t really have that potential, but to act like it’s impossible now is blowing things out of proportion.
It actually started out as weird photos on 4chan long before it got to YouTube, it’s a lot like SCP in that it’s a type of folk horror project. It grew out of the early liminal space art scene which has been going on and off since the 90s at least but hadn’t reached maturity until around when the Backrooms popped up, though everything from Silent Hill to Kubricks The Shing have played around with elements that would merge into the movement.
Also you’d be surprised how often horror breaks into the mainstream, just to go back to the Terminator franchise T1 is explicitly a tension building thriller which is argue is a type of horror.
Also just a bit of bitching but why do people think that the Terminator timeline is a closed loop? It’s stated as early as T2 that Judgement Day was delayed meaning that the Terminator timeline is either an unstable loop or a simple branching timeline, hell John may not have even existed until the first instance of time travel it couldve been Sarah leading the resistance and sent Kyle back and accidentally created John. Aight Terminator bitching over with.
