It’s change from the norm they’ve grown up on. Change is antithetical to conservatism.

Identity. Conservatism is more tribal.

Red team vs. blue team - if it harms the “other” then it’s probably good. With a helping of “I want you to hurt like me” mixed in.

We lost the conservatives when Carter espoused it and Reagan dismissed it.
