Democrats have won the Senate majority, a feat that seemed unreachable last year but that came to fruition with Republican candidates failing in states won just two years ago by President Trump, whose failing approval ratings was a huge drag on the GOP.

Victory in the Senate will deliver additional oversight powers to Democrats, who will now have a much bigger say on administration and judicial nominations.

They will also set the schedule for the Senate and have new powers to call in administration officials for hearings.

The string of Democratic victories sets the stage for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to return as majority leader in 2027 and for hardball negotiations with Trump on an array of issues, including on federal spending levels.

It’s also not just winning the majority, but (likely, not all fully-counted yet) winning the majority by a pretty substantial margin.

As my wife and I were watching the number of dem Senate seats get close to 50 she said “We just need to get to 51, right?” I had to remind her we actually needed 52 to overcome Fetterman. Thank Zeus we are well past that.

Still, it’s going to fall pretty far short of supermajority in either House or Senate, which means any chance of impeachment and conviction is off the table. Getting 10 R senators willing to vote to convict, regardless of the evidence, is going to be difficult to the point of near impossibility. Even after seeing more than a few R senators get their comeuppance right now and expecting to be on the ballot in 2028 with Vance or Rubio as the candidate, they’ll still stand for the loyalty test to try and latch on to the money teat.

AP has it at 53 to 41, with the remaining 6 split evenly. Even if all 6 went Democratic there not enough to beat the filibuster.

Every vote matters in the senate. These seats are there for 6 years. That give dems a buffer in the future.

True, but we will see how many Republican senators are willing to break with a significantly weakened Trump.
