If I’m out walking around and I see a small beetle flipped over on its back, should I give him a nudge or let it be? I feel bad for the little dudes. But they got themselves into this situation so maybe they deserve to be a quick bird snack? But if I were stuck I would hope for some help and not being eaten. Plus the more stupid ones I save will keep the stupid genes going and the longer before we have to compete with sentient beetles. But then again, like, nature. I’m torn. Dziękuję
I definitely would help. Just to compensate the nature for dozens of stinkbugs that invade my house in the fall and that I flush down the toilet.
New twist on the trolly problem
Is it invasive?
No action happens in a vacuum. Helping the beetle means that some thing doesn’t get lunch. Think of the birds or little snakes.
So, if it’s invasive let them eat, if it’s not, flip it over.
Either way probably doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things, though.
Are you trying to crowd-source a pass on the Voight-Kampff test?
Hmmm… they really shouldn’t get a chance to cheat with their phone during the test.
Not heard of the ‘Phone a friend’ option?
Sounds like socialism to me. How’s he ever to become a self-determined economic actor if he’s dependent on big human to get him off his back? Maybe if he paid you for it it would be ok. Ask him if hes familiar with Ayn Rand. If not, that’s a good place to start.
The worst socialism of all is when a comrade collectivizes my post
This is just the market regulating itself.
True, that bug does not seem like a man of the mind.
Lazy freeloaders.
I always help them because I rank all animals above humans.

I flip them over. Give him/her a fighting chance. If they flip over a second time, well, I assume they are done with that life.
Yeah I raise beetles at home and they rarely need help flipping over. So the beetle you see may be injured or something. But, for me, I would feel better if I gave that little gal another day, so I’d do it.

Sometimes insects like cockroaches (not entirely sure about beetles) end up on their backs if they have been exposed to pesticides as the may lose motor control of some limbs. So usually they will not live too much longer. Not just because they are not their backs, but because of other issue. So flip once, but they may end up like that again and may be on deaths door.
What if it’s a reincarnation of Hitler? Wouldn’t take the chance.
Sure
I always give them a hand. I also go out of my way to move them to safer or nicer spots. This world is not built for them like it is for us, so the least I can do is help where I can.
Recently there’s a monarch that has been hanging around my front garden patch and I’m pretty sure it’s the Caterpillar that was trying to get run over in my drive way. I moved it to the flowers we have there and I’m happy to see it doing well.
That’s so sweet! Post a pic if you catch it on camera!
I can’t get the butterfly, it’s too quick, but here’s the little wiggler!

It depends on if the beetle can afford to pay
Flip a coin and let destiny decide.
