we encountered this for the first time over the weekend.

Hitting “play” on a service I pay for, and then seeing 50 seconds of unrelated ads was unbelievably jarring.

I’ll admit/concede that we aren’t dropping Prime, we use too much of it all around. But that night? I immediately fired up the Ol’ Blackbeard and downloaded the rest of the season. Screw that noise.

I cancelled 6 months ago. It just ran out yesterday.

Now I have to put $35 of physical items in my cart for free shipping. Oh no! what ever will I do!?

It used to be just 25$ till recently. Also, if you are just getting common household goods, walmart might give you free shipping(not sure on locale)

I’ve been meaning to cancel for a while but luckily remembered right before the renewal.

Yep. It’s so easy spending $35 and waiting just a little extra for packages to arrive.

The ad insert into prime video was the last straw.

Ads in toddler shows! I couldn’t believe it when I saw the first one. What an unethical business model.

I’m glad that I really only use Prime for their shipping and shopping perks.

Same, bought a NUC and set up a servarr+jellyseerr+jellyfin over the weekend. It was much simpler than anticipated, and the experience is so much better than any streaming service. The NUC will pay for itself within a year once I cancel all these fucking subscriptions.

      Easiest cancel I ever did.

They fucked up music earlier in the year as well, because apparently listening to tracks in the same order the artist intended is a premium only feature.

Went to Spotify for that. Went to Jellyfin for video.

I used to just pirate stuff I couldn’t find through other means but I finally snapped the other night when a series was split up over different services. I’m not paying for more services just to watch one show. Piracy ahoy.

Another classic example where the upper echelons of a company look at spreadsheets more than they use their own damn product. SMH

Have you ever read about subscription services and how people don’t cancel them for years even after they stop using them?

You ever hear about AOL having millions of subs for years and years long after the service was relevant, as recently as 2021?

Reminds me that I still have a 23c/month bill for something that I haven’t used in years. I should cancel that at some point.

Netflix isn’t just inserting ads. They are also locking content behind higher subscription plans.

    Let the black flag fly.
