Out of curiosity, have you been a moderator before?
It’s a fairly thankless job that you volunteer for. Most people aren’t doing it out of some lust for power, they’re just doing their best and sometimes make bad calls.
Are there shitty ones out there? Sure. But many of them are just trying to make nice spaces for their interest.
School isn’t just learning the stuff in the classes. It’s the shared experience too. It’s the teachers holding you accountable for learning.
“Going to school” is a very different thing than just trying to learn on your own. Self motivation and time are a huge barrier for a lot of people. I think the OP was imagining being able to go to school every day and just take classes for free with other people also interested.
It’s really great, isn’t it? I tried to get some friends into it but it seems like I’m the only one who enjoys rhythm games. I really like The Magician I think
Over COVID, we started a bad/cult movie night that I streamed over Discord. Streaming via Twitch/Youtube would get copyright struck immediately. Streaming over Discord worked, but you have no real control over stream quality, and often the stream quality is based on the person with the worst connection. You also are locked to 30/60 FPS, which sometimes causes small frame weirdness when most movies are at 24.
An easy, self hosted solution is exactly what I wanted at the time. I played with setting up a streaming server but it ended up being too much of a headache at the time.
There’s a ton of valid reasons to self host. Just because you can’t think of any doesn’t mean it’s pointless.
It’s definitely hard to know when being overly enthusiastic ends and when love bombing begins. I agree that it isn’t always necessarily malicious but, as with most everything, clear open communication is the solution.
Maybe, but to me it’s voice chat + matchmaking.
I used to play on a few Day of Defeat: Source servers, and I met a ton of great online friends there. That’s because they were dedicated and moderated servers that kicked and banned people for being assholes, in or out of voice chat.
But… If you’re confident that you’re never going to see the people in your match again, it’s way easier to be assholes to them.

There is no reason to display “100%” in your UI for more than a single second. Either show 99% and then finish, or show 100% only when you are ACTUALLY done and only show it for a little.
If you’re still doing ANYTHING AT ALL don’t say you’re 100% complete. How is it still like this
So a lot of Java hate I think is mostly in jest.
Personally, Java was the programming language that I had to use for my first two years of college. It’s how I learned OOP, data structures, and algorithms. I had to use Eclipse, which at the time was AWFUL (and maybe still is, no idea). I remember it being semi-normal for it to take over a minute to launch on my (gaming) PC.
Later on, as I learned other languages and got a job, I just haven’t really had a reason to go back to Java, and most of my memories of it are from being annoyed at Eclipse and needing to implement Quicksort in it. I’m sure it’s a great language and I bet it’s a lot better and more convenient now. It’s just kinda trendy and weirdly nostalgic to hate on it in a half-serious way :) .
Java has a lot of advantages, but that’s a crazy statement. I feel like literally everyone complains about basic stuff like public static void main, over reliance on factories and OOP, and just how much code you need to generate for some basic stuff. I’m not a Java hater, but I am glad I don’t have to use it anymore.

How does Valve prevent you from controlling your own device? Their version of Linux isn’t locked down, you can fully customize it like any Linux afaik.
Every time people talk about this, they always envision the most morbidly obese example that they can think of, when we’re really just talking about the average slightly overweight/obese people. Those people often have their actual medical needs ignored by doctors and are given “lose weight” as a cure all. There are literally hundreds of millions of people who experience this.
I could see the login part being nice, but I still don’t really see the value in federating chat text. Honestly that would be a negative to me, I don’t really want my chat messages copied and federated out to other servers forever. Similarly, why would I want to view a chatroom through Lemmy? Why wouldn’t I just want to go to that community through it’s app or site or whatever?
It just feels a bit like blockchain all over again. Federation and activitypub are great tools for some purposes but people seem to want to use them for everything.
How would a Discord-like application integrate with Lemmy? Are chat logs federated to posts in Lemmy? Do posts in Lemmy get federated to this other chat thing? Can you just sign into chat with your Lemmy username and that’s it? Is it just a chatroom that’s associated with a community?
I feel like people here are like “everything should be federated” but sometimes I don’t really follow the thought process. I get it with Lemmy and Mastodon, but maybe someone could explain what a Federated Discord looks like.
This is a great definition. There’s a lot of “sci Fi” that is much more firmly in the realm of fantasy (I say this as someone who kinda likes Dr Who). Being in space is not enough IMO to be called sci Fi.
I do think BG3 is a very impressive game and deserves a lot of the praise it gets.
That said, it sucks how finicky it is to run away from a fight. There’s way too many fights that just sort of happen with very little explanation as to why they’re attacking you. It’s also waaay too easy to accidentally steal things and trigger fights, especially on controller.
You basically do have to save scum a little, because one accident can lead to an entire town being pissed at you. If the game had better ways to de escalate combat and some better signposting of consequences, it’d be a 10/10 game
It’s updated a bit and looks great! Worth watching.
