That’s also pretty true for people, unfortunately. People are deeply incapable of differentiating fact from fiction.

Limited visibility, limited comprehension, limited attention, and limited risk aversion.
It is definitely picking up very quickly currently. Far more common in the last couple years than before.
I can put my credit card number in any transaction directly, and so can anyone else. Digital payment can provide a random one time card number (at the expense of privacy, admittedly). Physical cards are absolutely not safer.
73% of Americans are overweight. They’ll be just fine if they eat out less.
Disingenuous attribution of a local environmental variable to a national crisis is pretty pathetic. Oregon isn’t even exceptionally high on the opiod death rate.
Oh fuck off dude.
That’s why the vast majority of people who lose weight either fail or end up regaining the weight in less then a couple years.
Seriously, you have a better chance of quitting heroin than losing significant weight and keeping it off.
What. No. We drive far more, and have more cars. In 1960 nearly a quarter of households didn’t even have a car. Now that is only 10%.
Here is a study on occupational movement, which has decreased significantly (100 kcal a day - which is roughly a pound bodyweight energy lost per month).
In addition, people had far more incidental and leisure movement - considering that hours of TV watched nearly doubled.
Of course, our trash diet is a huge aspect, and probably the lions share - but the lack of movement is not insignificant
*It is definitely not too late to mitigate a ton of suffering. *
I’ve said it elsewhere: environmental nihilism is deeply unethical. There is a ton we can do to minimize damage and restore the environment.
Environmental nihilism only serves to make the world a worse place.
I will repeat this here:
While there are a lot of factors, you really cannot understate the size of the homes being built in the US. We are building homes nearly 3x the size (despite cost per square foot only going up slightly), and pretending it has no effect on housing costs. It’s actually pretty insane.
The prude subcurrent on Lemmy is apparently massive. You honestly are being hardly inconvenienced by boob streams and yet it deserves and inordinate amount of complaining. On a real impact basis, you are far more impacted by video games you aren’t interested in than boob streamers.
Called out for what? Please, continue demonizing sex work.
This is not the function of the phone.
There is a whole Wikipedia page showing changes in name. The function of the first past the post system means these are fundamentally the same constructs with different branding. If a party replaces democrats or republicans, then we will be back in the same place in an election cycle.
That’s not true either, it is simply that democracy is complex and messy. Vote in primaries, campaign for better candidates, and pay money to organizations that support the things that matter most to you.
Very few people love their candidate, even with alternative voting systems. Compromise is indeed part of the deal.
It’s a war.
If only sex was as simple as a selection of gametes. There is a wide range of chromosomal, hormonal, genitalia, and physiological variation in human sex characteristics, and it is much more common than you think. And that is ignoring much more subtle variation and overlap between the sexes - cognitive, emotional, psychological - that are just as much a part of the natural variation of human sex as any other.
And before you come back with an argument about some rhetoric about “conditions” or what ever - all of evolution starts as a rare variation that becomes common in a certain population. Certain eye colors are nearly the same rarity.
Finally, there are plenty of animals that have individuals that do not reproduce. Examples are naked mole rats. We aren’t a eusocial species, but it isn’t to say we don’t have some very early characteristics of it.
