On my old Mastodon Profile i’ve made a list of Rebuilds/Fan Remakes (when possible #opensource , no commercial remakes) for old PC Games, and i want to share it here on Lemmy too.
Why?
I’ve played lot of these games, and i’m glad there a Fans who still working on these games, to make it accessible on modern systems (and giving them some QoL improvments). In my opinion, that’s a great way to preserve old games from being forgotten and keep playable for new players.
Also these people need some recognition (at least) for their hard work.
I’m glad If you help to complete this list and contribute some games you know.
In the moment there are
-49 Games in total
-37 Remakes, SourcePorts etc.
Extra space here for ScummVM, who are supporting a lot of games from different companies, Lucas Arts and Sierra, but also Westwood (Eye of the Beholder) and New World Computing (Might and Magic I, III and IV). The whole list is here

Addendum Console Games: If you are looking for Ports for Console Games to PC here is this list on GitHub
Also i would recommend the Open Source Port of the First two Jake and Daxter games
Legacy of Kane Blood Omen fan remake - https://omnicide.razorwind.ru/en/
Throw Manic Miners on there. It’s a fan remake of the old Lego Rock Raiders game, and it’s really fun. There’s a custom level builder and I think there’s a browser you can search for other custom levels.
Don’t forget the Xash3D engine for GoldSrc games (e.g. Half-Life and mods). It runs on everything from a PSP to a PC. And it’s faithful. It relies on the original assets.
You seem like you might like osgameclones.com. It’s absolutely massive because it includes projects even if they’re unfinished or abandoned, but you can sort by playability, development status, even programming language if you’re looking to contribute.
Thanks for the Tip. I try to look for games that are playable and almost complete and are it to the list
https://osgameclones.com/ is the best aggregate for this kind of thing.
https://libregamewiki.org/ also looks like something relevant.Maybe now that we have a messy thread of various links, we can go check whether some of them are not yet listed in osgameclones.
XCOM 1 (UFO Defense) and XCOM 2: Terror From The Deep - OpenXCOM https://openxcom.org/
Master of Orion 1 - 1oom https://github.com/1oom-fork/1oom
Ultima 6 - Nuvie https://github.com/nuvie/nuvie (apparently now part of ScummVM)
A few more honorable mentions that are not exact re-implementations with compatibility with the original datafiles, but more spiritual followups:
Total Annihilation - TA Spring > Spring Engine > Recoil Engine > Beyond All Reason https://github.com/beyond-all-reason (I think there are mods that make it “Basically TA”)
Escape Velocity/EV Nova - Endless Sky https://endless-sky.github.io/
Goldeneye 64 (multiplayer only) - Goldeneye Source https://forums.geshl2.com/index.php?topic=7823.0
Warlords II - LordsAWar! https://libregamewiki.org/LordsAWar!
Beside the already mentioned Open Source Game Clones there’s also this list on GitHub.
As for specific titles, I’d like to add:
- Fallout Community Edition and Fallout 2 Community Edition
- VCMI (open-source engine for Heroes of Might and Magic III)
- OpenGOAL (port of Jax and Daxter, second and third game in development)
- OpenGothic (officially only supports Gothic 2 but works with the first game as well)
- Perfect Dark port
- Super Mario 64 Port
- TRX – Tomb Raider I & II: Community Edition
There’s also WipeOut Phantom Edition but this one isn’t open-source so I’ll just leave it here in case someone wants to check out the existing build.
Thanks for the list, but i try to keep it in the PC Side of gaming, mostly i’m more familiar with that. I’ll think about If and how i add these to the list :) Thanks again:)
Yeah, I’ve seen it after writing this. Thankfully, half of these are for PC native games so I didn’t miss completely at least.
I added them anyway to Addendum ;)
- Super Mario Bros. X is a Mario fan-game remake that uses lots of assets from the SNES era of Mario games (Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario RPG).
- Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a Sonic fan game made from the Doom engine, inspired by the Sega Genesis era of Sonic games.
They’re both open-source.
I like this two but i try to keep it in the pc gaming Side, less the console Side. Mostly because i never Had a console;)
I mean you can only play them on PC, so I’m not really sure what you’re saying here
Sorry it was very unclear. I’ve meant to focus this list on Remakes/source Ports of PC Games mostly. I added a link to a list of console games source Ports at the end of the list.
